Ipswich agree fee with Newcastle striker - final piece in the jigsaw for Magilton’s men?
by stresster on August 19th, 2008After an outstanding 3-0 win at Barnsley, some might question whether Ipswich Town need any additional firepower in their ranks. However, Jim Magilton is clearly keen to bring in another striker, who could form a prolific partnership with Kevin Lisbie.
The BBC report that, barring a miracle, Shola Ameobi will be arriving at Portman Road in the next day or two and help the Tractor Boys try and achieve their goal of playing in the Premier League. The Newcastle striker has struggled to hold down a first-team place at St James’ Park in his many seasons at the club, and was farmed out to Stoke City on loan for a few matches last term.
Town manager Jim Magilton told the club website: “We have agreed a fee with Newcastle for Shola and he spent time at the club having a medical.
“Things are moving on. Hopefully we can get it all tied up.”
While the player didn’t do a great deal at Stoke in his short time there, perhaps he just needs a new club to give him a run of games so that he can demonstrate his quality. There’s no doubt that his career has been sidetracked up to now, but is this a good signing for Town or a massive gamble?

A word of warning to you Tractor Boys…please please don’t rely on Ameobi to get you back in the Premiership.99% of Newcastle supporters must be clapping their hands at the thought of getting any money for him!!
The first thing Magilton will have to teach him is …the off side rule!! He couldn’t get it right when it was the simple rule!! To paraphrase that well known North East saying..He’ll never make a footballer as long as he has an entrance to his rectum !!!
Good Luck to you all.

I don’t think Shola is good enough for a club that would expect to be in the top half of the Premiership (having spent many years watching the Toon). Having said that, I would expect him to be a better player in the Championship - I know he didn’t set Stoke alight, but he had an injury (you need to keep an eye on his hips!).
Chopra was similar - didn’t do much for us (or, so far, for Sunderland) in the top-flight, but had a good time at Cardiff…
I would say as well that Shola is an honest player, I’ve always been led to believe he has a great attitude on and off the pitch (although I can’t honestly say I know about his off-pitch attitude), and I wish him the best of luck. He’s awkward to play against, but I wouldn’t say he’s really a natural goalscorer (at least, not in the top flight).
His running style sometimes makes it look like he’s not trying (he is, it’s just it doesn’t look like it), and he can trap the ball quite a distance - but he seems to have these extendible legs which he can use to keep control of the ball, which makes up for that.
I would loved him to have made the grade at Newcastle, but I don’t think he was quite up to the standard. However, I think he’ll be a very good Championship player.
