Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal already looking shaky - will it be a cakewalk for Chelsea this season?
by stresster on August 19th, 2008Everyone accepts that the Premier League is no more than a four-horse race, with the likes of Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa still a country mile away from challenging for the title. However, it’s already looking doubtful as to whether three members of the ‘Big Four’ can hack the pace this term, especially with Chelsea’s glittering array of attacking options under Phil Scolari.
Indeed, you could be forgiven for forgetting that the Blues were without the injured Drogba and Essien on Sunday as they tore apart a Pompey team who kept a sackload of clean sheets last season. While it’s too early to brand them the champions, it’s little wonder that the bookmakers have now installed Chelsea as favourites, especially with Man United looking so lacklustre against Newcastle.
Fair play to the Magpies for a spirited performance, although it’s clear that the Red Devils are now heavily reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo, and will continue to be so until a) the Portuguese wizard recovers from injury or b) Sir Alex realises they need more midfield creativity. OK, so they were also missing Tevez on Sunday but their midfield is still pretty average without their star player.
Liverpool continue to splash the cash on new players, and while the likes of Dossena, Keane and Degen will take time to bed in, this trio are not going to turn you into Premier League title challengers. And nor will Gareth Barry. Saturday’s win over Sunderland reminded me of their 2-1 win at Villa Park last season, ie laboured.
As for Arsenal, are you seriously trying to tell me that the Gunners can win the league when they’re starting with the likes of Walcott, Ramsey, Djourou and Denilson? These are all players with bags of potential but still massively inexperienced.
Phil Scolari has inherited a squad brimming with talent, sensibly added Deco and Bosingwa into the mix, and I’d be massively surprised if anyone gets near them this season.

No
If you think the first game of the season is an indicator to the whole season, you’re a fool.
Jonny Dead - August 19th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I think it’s fair to say that the season is already over. After one game. Do you think maybe you’re being a little premature?
GunnerX - August 19th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Well clearly after just one game chelski will win the prem league come may 09. I think you will have to eat your words you muppet!

Has Mr Comfort changed his name to Stresster? because the same crap is being published. If you are going to base the outcome of of the premiership season on one game I think you need to spend the next few years in a padded room. Maybe you’re Phil Scolaris secret lover.
alex - August 19th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Djourou has played in a World cup???? How can he be considered inexperienced? Walcott has played internationally and in many champions leagues games…..Denilson has played for Brazil and played in about 15 games last season.
What a waste of server space this website is. I wish I never wasted the time in reading it and even writing this!!!!!!

Do you not realize Man U dropped several points early in the season last year and still won the double?
Also Liverpool is without Ryan Babel, Mascherano, or Lucas so that will boost them alot.
In other words stop being a twat.

THIS IS THE WORST BLOG EVER!
The writer knows nothing of football, and rehashes tabloids transfer stories 95% of the time. In fact, i’d rather you stick to copying others work than write your own… YOU ARE RUBBISH

yeah - August 19th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
obviously the writer is a chelski fan
what happened last year with a chelsea team laden with talent
Lost the carling cup to tottenham (they finished 12th in the prem)
lost the prem and champions league to manu
lost the fa to who?????
add in deco, bosinwhatever and scolari…does not mean your going to win the league nor anything.
portsmouth is not the same team they were last year…they lost muntari who will be the hardest person for them to replace. They are not a good indicator of success. Wait till the middle of the year when all the ole geezers on the chelski have their knocks, then who will play?
please tell me this is not your day job - August 19th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I wouldn’t pack up my boots up if I was LFC, MU, or AFC just yet.
It is true Chelsea were by far the best looking of the top four on the first weekend of the season - however it is also true to say that had the referee done his job - MotM Deco would have been sidelined in the first few minutes for a horror tackle - different game then.
If 1 game made you champions I imagine I wouldn’t stll be waiting 18 years for a title.
LFC4EVA - August 19th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Your article is probably how you perform in bed a bit premature…

Maybe if we don’t comment they won’t get money and will all be fired. Perhaps they can hire some decent journalists instead of people who copy and paste from The Sun.

I think you are all doing Stresster a huge wrong by commenting so adversely on his remarkable insight and perception. I thought it was obvious after only 32.5 seconds that Chelsea will be far too strong for anyone else to challenge for the title this year. I also believe that a man will walk on the moon before the end of this century and that Christmas will fall on the 25th of December. I know it’s a stretch but it is my firm belief that Caughtoffside will one day be seen as the most intelligent and accurate sites for predicting football matters and that Stresster and that other soccer guru Mr Comfort will run the Premier League and take it to new heights of stupendousness. Man, I love this site!

what kind of reckless bloging is this? talk about jumping the gun your basing your judgment after one fcuking game, go jump out a window
BLUE FRANK - August 20th, 2008 at 5:18 am
Liverpool are crap. Benitiz has pulled your team apart over the years so get ready for another 19 years of no premo title. He has wasted shit loads of money over the years by buying on average 12.5 players per year. One word, clueless!
Arsenal have to many young players even though they have a great manager.
Utd did start of poor last year but so did Chelsea and with loads of injuries and yet it still turned into a two horse race. I agree that Chelsea will dominate this year and all you clueless pricks will have to agree, Chelsea is the best. Muppits………………………………….
JJ - August 20th, 2008 at 7:49 am
So…Chelsea a team that cost HALF A BILLION pounds had a good start to the season AT HOME against a very average portsmouth team and the chavs think its all over…..wow everyone else should stop playing now………
BLUE FRANK - August 20th, 2008 at 9:09 am
Finally. Somebody with a bit of sence…………………
daddyblue - August 20th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
It looks as if you have touched a few nerves there stresster well done. whilst it may be a little too early to predict the outcome of the league but I would be happy to predict that Chelsea will be there or there abouts.
Blue Swimmer - August 21st, 2008 at 2:56 am
ManU are still favourites and they’re entitled to be. Can’t have too many draws though. Chelsea need a change in mentality more than anything else. It will take results in pressure games to see if Scolari has done this. Interesting but way too soon for predictions.
