Everyone accepts that the Premier League is no more than a four-horse race, with the likes of Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa still a country mile away from challenging for the title. However, it’s already looking doubtful as to whether three members of the ‘Big Four’ can hack the pace this term, especially with Chelsea’s glittering array of attacking options under Phil Scolari.

Indeed, you could be forgiven for forgetting that the Blues were without the injured Drogba and Essien on Sunday as they tore apart a Pompey team who kept a sackload of clean sheets last season. While it’s too early to brand them the champions, it’s little wonder that the bookmakers have now installed Chelsea as favourites, especially with Man United looking so lacklustre against Newcastle.

Fair play to the Magpies for a spirited performance, although it’s clear that the Red Devils are now heavily reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo, and will continue to be so until a) the Portuguese wizard recovers from injury or b) Sir Alex realises they need more midfield creativity. OK, so they were also missing Tevez on Sunday but their midfield is still pretty average without their star player.

Liverpool continue to splash the cash on new players, and while the likes of Dossena, Keane and Degen will take time to bed in, this trio are not going to turn you into Premier League title challengers. And nor will Gareth Barry. Saturday’s win over Sunderland reminded me of their 2-1 win at Villa Park last season, ie laboured.

As for Arsenal, are you seriously trying to tell me that the Gunners can win the league when they’re starting with the likes of Walcott, Ramsey, Djourou and Denilson? These are all players with bags of potential but still massively inexperienced.

Phil Scolari has inherited a squad brimming with talent, sensibly added Deco and Bosingwa into the mix, and I’d be massively surprised if anyone gets near them this season.
