Newcastle United set to break the bank to keep little Mickey Owen, is he worth it?
by Dexter on August 19th, 2008The S*n reports that Newcastle United are preparing a sumptuous contract for little Mickey Owen - the biggest in their history - in a bid to keep him at St James’.
Newcastle have been through a lot with their pint-sized Mickey Owen, holding his hand whilst his groin was fiddled with by German doctors, telling him everything was going to be OK when he royally knackered his knee with England, and mopping his tears when he realised Kevin Keegan was returning to Newcastle. So it’s only right that Newcastle should try their hardest to truss little Mickey up in a watertight new contract, but is he really worth all the dosh?
MICHAEL OWEN was last night offered £21million to stay at Newcastle.
Owner Mike Ashley has handed the England striker the biggest deal in Toon history — a three-year contract worth a whopping £140,000 a week.
It would make Owen not only one of the Premier League’s highest-paid stars but also one the world’s richest.
The ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid ace, 28, whose current £100,000-a-week deal expires in the summer, could leave on a free unless Newcastle tie him down now. (The S*n)
Surely signing Owen to a new contract would only be a Pyhrric victory, as their wage bill would be bloated by this one contract. Would they be better cutting their losses and letting Owen leave?

Although i dont believe a word of it to be honest, the same paper said we asked him to take a £30k cut, now says we’re offering him more than £30k more..
If it was me.. i’d offer 3 year contract at £120k, he can hardly argue that he deserve’s more.. Then at some point try and flog him, cause it’d be terrible to see him leave on a bosman after paying £18m..
So all in all i think £140k is far too much, it may be necessary unless they’re willing to accept that £18m buys you a handful of appearances and goals

How do the media expect us to believe their stories? They have been telling us for the past two to three months that Owen would have to a 60,000 pounds a week pay cut now suddenly they expect us to believe this abrupt story change. Personally I firmly believe that it is our media spouting more drivel designed purely and simply to turn the Newcastle fans against Owen. Let us not fall for this stunt and treat it with the contempt it deserves.

Hi,
Why dont we sell Michael Owen for 10- 12 million pounds,
We have a perfect captain in Steven Taylor and Shay Given,
Michael doesnt get half as much goals as he should,
Use the money to try and lure Joe Cole at end of season when Chelsea sign Robinho nest year.
Martins is better , He just needs a partner like ” A FIT ” viduka
