Tottenham’s failure to beat Sunderland on Saturday will leave them travelling to Stamford Bridge on Sunday 31st August with no more than a point from their first two matches. There wasn’t much between Spurs and Middlesbrough last weekend, although the former are in danger of getting off to the same slow start which dogged the campaign last term. By the sounds of things, it’s going to take a while before the team get their act together under Juande Ramos.

The Daily Mirror reports that Jonathan Woodgate is a bit peeved about losing to his previous club and he’s called on his Tottenham team to start working harder as a group. You might be forgiven for thinking that hard work and a desire to win is a pre-requisite in any sporting contest if you want to beat the opposition, although it sounds as though Spurs could do more when they lose possession.

And the England centre-half has told his team-mates that going forward is only half the game. “We had a lot of the ball, but lost it too often and have to work harder as a team to get it back,” said the Boro-born star.

“When we’ve got the ball we’re a good team but when we haven’t we have to be more compact.

“It’s going to take a bit of time but let’s see where we end up at the end of the season.”

Just where will Tottenham end up at the end of the season? It’s unfortunate that this Dimitar Berbatov saga hasn’t been settled before the campaign got underway and it’s surely annoying to the fans that a player is coming on as sub whose heart clearly isn’t in it. Will this be another season where the most that fans can expect is a League Cup success?
