It’s been a decent start to Wolves’ season, after coming from behind twice to draw with Plymouth, and then going a goal down to Sheffield Wednesday before running out 4-1 winners. It’s clear that goalscoring isn’t proving too much of a problem for Mick McCarthy’s men, although they’re not proving too watertight at the back. With Jody Craddock now out of action for a good while, the west Midlands club are in the hunt for some cover and they look close to landing a player who is proven quality at Championship level.

Danny Higginbotham has only been at the Stadium of Light for a year, following his £2.5 million move from Stoke City, yet the Daily Mirror reports that the former Southampton player could be set to join Wolves for around £1 million. Danny Collins and Nyron Nosworthy appear to be the first-team picks in the heart of the Sunderland defence, something which could see the player leaving to play more football, albeit back in the English second flight.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has made a £1.25m swoop for Sunderland defender Danny Higginbotham.

The pair were talking personal terms last night after the Black Cats accepted the offer. McCarthy moved after losing Jody Craddock to a foot injury and he is confident of signing Higginbotham, 29, today despite interest from his former club Stoke.

Higginbotham started his career at Manchester United and has actually commanded over £6 million in transfer fees during his time as a footballer. Will he decide to drop down and ply his trade at yet another Midlands club (having also played for Derby) or will Stoke come in at the last minute for him?
