Ligue 1 side Rennes have reportedly made an approach for Arsenal defender Johan Djourou.
The French team would like to take the 21-year-old Swiss International on some form of loan-deal, but it is unlikely Gunners manager Arsene Wenger will let him leave the Emirates Stadium, while Kolo Toure and Philippe Senderos are still out injured.
The absence of Senderos and Toure meant that Djourou got a rare start against West Bromwich Albion in the Premiership curtain raiser last Saturday. The central defender is now keen to impress Wenger and finally take his chance to establish himself in the Arsenal first-team.
“It’s going well,” Djourou told Tribune de Geneve.
“I’m only 21 and I know that I still have a lot to learn.
“I hope this season will be very good for me.” (Premiershiplatest.com)
I am a big fan of the huge Swiss defender who has shown great professionalism as he has attempted to get the attention of his boss and try to secure a run in the starting eleven. Four years on from his Arsenal debut, Johan has managed just 26 Premier League starts, but did manage to get a place in the first game of the season against West Bromwich Albion where he helped secure the win by clearing off the line and then had the guts to stand up to William Gallas’ crazy attack on him.
Whilst there are many youngsters at the Emirates who could use a loan deal to help build up their confidence and experience, Djourou has served his time ably at St Andrews last term and is better off staying at the club to challenge the established centre-back pairing of Gallas and Toure.
One thing is for sure, he is far far better than Senderos, so maybe Rennes should consider approaching the club to take him on loan instead! Do Gunners fans think that its time to give Djourou more of a chance to prove himself, or is the current pairing at the back too solid? Maybe he could be drafted in to play the defensive midfield role as he has in the past?

Give him a chance… He aint no John Terry but he is as good as the defenders what we have right now at the club. I feel ability wise he is close to the level as Toure and Gallas. Far better than Send ‘him packing’ ros. Senderos would not of cleared the line on saturday.. The ball would of went through his legs or he would of been no where near the goal-line. Djourou ahead of senderos for me!!!

Yeah I’ll go with that Djourou ahead of Senderos, but then I’d put ny Gran ahead of Senderos

I guess you lot forgot about the game against Newcastle when Senderos was caught out of position (just like Djourou) but ran back and cleared the ball off the line right before it rolled over. But I’m sure most people forget about the times Senderos had a good game. I prefer Djourou as well because he’s more athletic, but once Senderos gets a run of games he is NOT a bad defender!

Senderos is better in the air than Djourou but in terms of reading the game, tactical awareness and positioning, Djourou has the edge.

So what was that name of the Swiss bloke who played brilliantly for us over two legs against AC Milan?
afc - August 20th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
he has the potential to become 1 of the best defenders in the world….

Just because Senderos looks like a certain Cygan, It doesn’t put him in the same shit bracket.
He’s done well over the past few seasons. helped Arsenal to the CL finals.
Djourou will get better over time, he’s a defender, remember?

mjc - August 20th, 2008 at 6:45 pm So what was that name of the Swiss bloke who played brilliantly for us over two legs against AC Milan?————-I think it was the same name as the guy that jointly holds the record for the longest run without conceding a goal in the Champions League also. Only know nothing mugs slate Senderos, because it’s easy and requires little imagination. he’s a solid defender who when he does make a mistake is unlucky enough that it nearly always causes us to concede an opportunity on our goal, others, namely Toure who had a miserable 2nd half to last season made more mistakes and got away with it, where are all the aforementioned mugs with thier snidey comments now? Typical and very sad!

The problem with Senderos is, he makes mistakes against high profile opposition, Drogba for one has stripped him naked(figuratively) on more than one occasion also last season Torres gave him a torrid time. I like Senderos as a player but once he starts making mistakes he just loses it. But when he is on song (not Alex!!!) he is very good.
