‘Arsenal very keen to sign £20m forward’ claims agent
by stresster on August 20th, 2008While Emmanuel Adebayor continues to be booed by large sections of Arsenal supporters, it must still be a relief that the Togolese striker has decided to stick around at the club and keep the forward line looking relatively healthy. Especially as Arsene Wenger has not brought anyone in to supplement the attack, despite being very interested in a certain star of Euro 2008.
Sky Sports reports that the Gunners were very interested in signing Andrei Arshavin and that it wasn’t just paper talk. However, as it often the way with a transfer target of theirs, they just weren’t prepared to stump up the readies to ensure that the Russian would be wearing red for club and country next season.
“Wenger was serious about buying Arshavin,” said Lachter in the Daily Express.
“If Andrei could have tempered his financial appetite, it was quite possible he would be playing at the Emirates right now.
“Arsenal were prepared to pay about £15million for him.
“(Arsene) Wenger is indeed a cunning fox who always says one thing and does the other. He wanted Andrei, but Arsenal are the only top English club who do not pay large salaries.”
A cunning fox eh! It’s clear that the Frenchman is incredibly shrewd when it comes to signing players, perhaps he’s the proper kind of manager that Harry Redknapp has been alluding to today. After all, nobody has to balance the books in quite the same way as Arsene Wenger and it was clear he would not be held to ransom in order to land Arshavin. Will Spurs now sign the player instead?

This clown has been saying all along that Zenit would accept nothing less than 20 million. Now he says Arsene could have had him for 15? And Arshavin turned down Arsenal because of money? I call bullshit. Lachter is just trying to keep his client’s profile high b/c no big clubs want him.
BringBackBananas - August 20th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
2nd highest wage bill?? that cant be true…
i would have put chelsea, manyoo, lpool and newcastle above them easily.
where are these records?
The Voice Of Reason - August 20th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
HELLO…according to Deloitte and Touche, Arsenal’s wage bill was just 2 million less than Man U’s. Do some research before you make ridiculous comments. You are embarrassing yourself.

8 months ago he was rate 8mil.
Sam allardyce almost sign him for magpie until he got sacked.
8 months later his value is doubled, or tripled(his club think so).
Enough said.
mike - August 20th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
its actually the third, chelsea was by miles the highest, and united was about 3.4m more then us if i remember correctly
The Voice Of Reason - August 20th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Here’s the 06/07 report. I don’t see how Spurs can afford him either since their wage bill is half of Arsenal’s.
same olded one - August 20th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
From the BBC Website
“Deloitte’s annual review of football finances showed Premier League wages rose 9% to £854m
Chelsea - £114m
Manchester Utd - £85m
Arsenal - £83m
Liverpool - £69m
Newcastle Utd - £52m ”
I know chelsea pay crazy money but we are not as bad as people would have you belive.
ours and manu’s is preety similar the only diff is we pay peanuts for our players to join us and they pay loads.

I believe these figures released were for financial year ending 2007. I would think that having sold Henry and not bought any experienced players since that Liverpool have overtaken them and perhaps even Spurs.
Colm - August 20th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Also, I think Arsenal dont pay as high wages for the top players but they do buy a lot of young players so in total the wage bill isnt that much less than say Man U. Still hard to believe it was that close in 2007. I imagine Man U are paying a lot more now though with the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo demanding more money.
Gunner4Life - August 20th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
You got to look at the total wage bill of the club against the total number of players vs the total number of players of the other teams. Does it include the reserves & U19 squad? Does it include or formidable Ladies squad? That will put the numbers in perspective. Does anyone have the answer to that?
Colm - August 20th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Anyway, I would buy Arshavin for 15m -18m but only if he accepts a salary of say 70-80k a week. He should be happy with that for a guy that hasnt played premier league football yet. If he just wants money then let Spurs pay it. Arsenal could do with him as another creative force on either wing.
Colm - August 20th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Gunnerlife, I doubt the women’s team’s wages are anything to add to the bill. What do they get paid? 50K a year each perhaps? For 20 players that would only add 1m to the bill. I imagine the sheer volume of these kids they buy at around 17 years old could cost a few more million in total though. Still, I imagine at least 80% of the wage bill is still coming from the first team squad.
Gooner. B. Top - August 20th, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Scotty you would trust the Daily Mail more than D & T? Where is the sense…!
Our wage bill IS/WAS (07/08) second highest because although we don’t pay our first team players as much as say the Mancs or the Pool of piss, we have a much larger reserve squad and as such our wage bill is larger than those mentioned above…. i think! haha
dream on spuds - August 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
No i think there confused between season ticket prices & player wages
were most probably 1/2nd in the table of season ticket prices
but that’s cause were a london club & the cost of living is a lot higher.
bojo - August 21st, 2008 at 7:45 am
i think hes goog
Mike Larry - August 21st, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I dont care how much we pay our players as long as they dont hike the ticket prices up any more. I bet the credit crunch doesn’t affect the salaries!
My only whinge is that the chilli dogs dont have enough chill! Oh and eboue is crap and walcott needs to learn at least 1 trick to skin a player.
Oh and it was so quite against WB…come on boys and girls, it was louder in the highbury library!!
Come on the gooners!!!
