Liverpool want £16m WING WIZARD!
by Mr Comfort on August 20th, 2008According to his agent and indeed this source, Benitez still wants this Spanish left-sided flair player, but is the price still just too damn high?!
Why not join the debate at the COS forum?
Espanyol are set to continue their hardline stance over Albert Riera – and insist Liverpool meet his £16m release clause.
The Spanish club are aware that Rafael Benitez has money to spend after the Gareth Barry deal was blocked by the owners, who were unwilling to go to £18m for that particular player.
But with Benitez in the market for a left-sided player to bolster his squad, Riera has re-emerged as one of the possibilities he is weighing up.
Liverpool considered making an offer in June when Riera hinted he wanted to leave the La Liga club after hitting out at their supporters.
But Benitez was unwilling to enter a bidding war for the 26-year-old then – valuing the player at closer to the £9m mark.
If Espanyol can’t be persuaded to lower their asking price he will walk away from the deal and look elsewhere, as time runs out to strengthen his wide areas before the closure of the transfer window.
“Liverpool want Riera but Liverpool are reluctant to meet Espanyol’s demands,” Riera’s agent Magico Diaz confirmed.
Earlier in the summer he said: “If Espanyol do finally receive an offer I do not want to miss the opportunity to go to Liverpool. The option to join a super-club doesn’t come every day. I am a realistic person but this has given me something to look forward to.
“To reject the possibility of a move would be madness.” (Daily Post)
As the Gareth Barry deal appears to be one that may well be dead in the water, the La Liga club will of course keep to their valuation thinking that Rafa may use the cash at his disposal on the Spanish international. However Benitez is no fool, he can see the valuation placed by Barcelona’s ‘lesser’ club is way too high.
Liverpool are very keen on more wide players such as Riera, but they won’t be held to ransom. Riera is a very good player, with a good turn of speed and pings in good crosses. However, for that price the Anfield outfit would expect a much more exciting and productive player. Do Liverpool fans think their boss should even consider such a bid or are there far better options to secure with such a high bid?

It’s the same garbage for COS day after day. I have heard this rumor from COS for months now. They have posted literally 30 transfer rumors about liverpool, and have gotten one right (Keane). No credibility here!

is this the same gimp that couldn get a game with man city?

We might as well f*ck with Villa. They don’t want to lower the price for Barry, we should ask about A.Young. He’s pretty decent. Just to wind O’neil up. You can see veins popping on his forehead. LMAO!!
Red's Fury™ - August 21st, 2008 at 1:40 am
This is crazy! £16mil for Reira??? The board can’t even pay £18mil for Barry, this is crap. Keep Alonso, his form are back, look no further. But if the £16mil price tag has scared off Liverpool, Reds moving for Downing also not so impressive too.
IMO, Silva would be a great signing, Joe Cole could be a good addition to the team too. We need class in the wing dept. not some average or seasoned player.

fine we’ve missed out on some top quality, but there are still some players with enough quality around, i wonder how rafa always praises his scouts cos for all i’ve been seeing, not sure they’re qualified…right wingers….menez (monaco) exciting player that can play both wings and even central(Kind of benitez option)…there;s kader keita ( Cote’ivoire, wing wizard plays for lyon), jounquin (still has got it), left wingers…..Diego capel (why is rafa not luking at him),….di maria ( not world class yet, bt with wat i,ve seen could turn out to be one,….quaresma (At least class)… downing ( if rafa wants premier lg proven), there are some others like lennon, schweinteiger, affellay, i don’t just understand this luv for riera, why rafa always luv mediocrity or avarage players, like someone said rafa needs to ask himself wenver he buys esp with decent money ” can this players make it in the other top3 ??????” if yes good, if no, luk elswhere. for every ronaldo, there’s a quarema, jounquin, silva.

SIlva will not be coming, as he has stated himself. Joaquin is available at 8m, as Blackburn are closing in. Di Maria is a good left sided player but as you can see during the olympics, his crossing is questionable. Riera is not a WING WIZARD, thus I was not expecting his name to show up when I clicked this link. Why are we constantly linked to mediocre players, I think I am starting to figure out what Rafa is trying to do. He is trying, not to be the one who helps Liverpool become champions, but he is trying to become the one who found a certain superstar in the “mediocre” pool. Another manager by the name of Gerard Houllier tried to do that, I don’t see him with us anymore. Hope Rafa gets the idea. 16m can get us quality, we did miss out on VDV (7m), Silva (16m), yes but there is no need to go into panic buying. We still got Benayoun and Babel, may not be the ones who can get us the title, but sure as hell beat some useless player that we may get out of desperation.

Marko Marin is the man for the Reds. Mark my words. If he is not grabbed now, Bayern Munich will sign him next season. That is if another top side does not grab him before then. I know he has been mentioned this summer, but nothing has materialised. He could adjust to the Premiership. Either Marin or Downing.

Good day all.
I think Rafa should make a bid to buy Arjen Robben from Real Madrid. I think Real will sell if we bid around 18million for him. Robinho is staying and not joining Chelsea, so Robben is not going to get first team football at Medrid as he would get at Liverpool. It would be nice to have him, he is a world class winger.

simply not worth that money, he’s all tricks and flicks, but too inconsistent. i’d prefer downing, he’d be cheaper and is better suited to the premership. he was outstanding when he came on for england last nite, sign him up. great english winger

why?when he can get downing.

Liverpool simply dont have the cash. They have Statler and Waldorf sitting in the box argueing like a couple of old muppets.
They have behaved disgracefully over Gareth Barry and should be suspended from trading for a period ie next transfer window. It reflects really badly on a great club.
Also Manchester United should have similar punishment imposed, as fines just get added to the existing debts and do not stop these clubs from breaking the rules.
Liverpool will sadly fail to win too many times this year to make a challenge to the top two.

Downing is not consistant either, last night he was good but i have seen games where he has failed to make any impact. he will probably be another Pennant (no disrespect). However if Downing is all we can get then i supose we will have to make do!

What’s wrong with Leighton James - or the Americo Winger with the handgrenade shot? Eh? Also Stevie Strawberry or Billy Banana. You guys are clueless.
Donavan Ried - August 21st, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Albert Riera for £16m would be as bad as Barry for £18m. There is better out there Rafa. But at least you are finally getting the message. Wingers Rafa,Wingers.

dont panic! dont panic! whoever the MIGHTY REDS go 4 the club involved is obviously goin to over price their player, just look at villa(wankers). barry 10million, not 18million. every true liverpool fan knows that XABI is class. had a bad season last yr. 2 broken metatarsels. but dont loose faith. JAVIER is 2come bk 2. then there is LUCAS & DAMIEN. 2 youngsters who will come on leaps n bounds this yr, TRUST ME. i think barry is wanted 4 numerous positions. CB. LB. DCM. LM. (any footy fan shud know wot they mean). versatillity is good but not 18million gud. enuf of that(the bloody barry saga). we need wingers!!!! BABEL is quality, big season 4 him this yr, but i feel eventually as he gets older he will be pushed up front. benayoun is ok but tries to beat 2 many players, instead of givin n goin. pennant is ok 4 2 or 3 games which basically ISNT GOOD ENOUGH. its unfortunate bout Leto, maybe not ready yet but the experience in this league 4him wud b priceless. it aint DIRK’s position but he gives 110% wherever he plays, just needs that bit of confidence back in front of goal…..ITS IN YOU DIRK!!!!! N’Gog & Pacheo dont look bad, lookin 4ward to seein Nemeth breakin thru. Fernando & Robbie shud compliment each other, but then again how many times will they play together?? in RAFA we believe………
onehundredshots - August 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 am
O’neil would not be crazy enough to let A Young go for less than Barry so I think he is out of the equation, then Downing’s not one i’m keen on and being english will probbly be overpriced.
Pennant, Kuyt, Voronin and if Lucas can be sold at a profit, so be it, but I’d rather we (Liverpool) keep Alonso
Calvo? Donde estas? Carajo!
