Welcome to the latest instalment of Premier League merry-go-round, where the arrival of one player at a club means that another can move on, and so on and so forth. Manchester City, shock horror, are actually about to complete a new signing. Just please don’t ask where they found the £6 million to splash out on this Hamburg defender!

The Daily Mail report that City’s bid for Vincent Kompany has been accepted by the German club, with the Belgian defender expected to arrive at Eastlands imminently. The player has been appearing for his country at the Olympics, thus incurring the wrath of his employers, and he now seems set to flip them the bird by jumping ship.

Despite their money problems, City have struck a deal for Kompany, 22, and Hamburg president Bernd Hoffmann claimed the transfer hinged only on the player passing a medical.

Hoffmann said: ‘We received an enquiry from Manchester asking whether Vince could imagine moving immediately and, depending on the medical examination, we quickly agreed to this transfer.’

Apparently, this means that Vedran Corluka will now be able to leave Manchester and sign for Tottenham, thus uniting him with Croatian team-mate Luka Modric. This would be a bad move for City, and it can only be down to the player wanting to leave rather than anything else. Still, reasons to be cheerful City fans, it seems there is some cash knocking round after all.
