Everyone loves a good conspiracy especially conspiracy theorists, they can’t get enough of them, but this one is priceless, but could it be true?
As soon as it was clear that Argentina would beat Brazil in their Olympic football semi-final (when the Argies went 2-0 up), Brazilian midfielder Lucas seemed hell-bent on picking up a red card. Lucas fouled Liverpool team-mate Javier Mascherano from behind, and was indeed sent off.
The red card means Lucas is not eligible to play in the bronze-medal match. Or, if you look at it another way, Liverpool get him back earlier than expected.
All this has got the conspiracy theorists raving. Did Rafa Benitez order either Lucas or Mascherano to pick up a late red card, depending on which team was losing? (Whoateallthepies.tv)
So, what do the fans think? An inspired plan or just plain coincidence?
Why not join the debate at the COS forum?

this is one of the stupidest commentaries i have ever come across. did rafa ask lucas? only a world class moron would risk making such a suggestion and only a bigger moron would listen to the first moron. whilst i think rafa is a moron (moron = person who never learns his lessons; see rotation policy, relationship with bosses, poor tactical approach to games, lack of preparedness etc), i doubt lucas is one. but i know for a fact that the person who wrote this conspiracy editorial is certifiably one.

consp – you obivously know nothing about football to say that rafa is a moron and poor tactical approach to games, lack of preparedness is the most stupidest thing ive ever seen anyone wrote about rafa. His tactical approch to games is secound to none proberly the best in the business. And lack of preparedness?? cant belive you wrote that he spends all week preparing for each game in training he gets the players ready for the next game (tactics etc) he goes through with each indivigual player telling him there job for the next game. Why do you even bother talknig about football and making yourself look liek a right idiot you have no football knowledge what so ever so just give it up now why dont you. People like you make me sick

Okay, so I do my best never to click on CaughtOffside links because they are a complete load of rubbish, but sometimes you can’t resist because of the headlines. I got caught again, but at least this time, I got a good laugh
And by the way, Rafa is a master tactician, but he doesn’t really understand the human side (motivation, mental states) – I’m hoping Sammy can pick up where Paco left off.

I love a good conspiracy theory but this one has a huge flaw in it. Why would Rafa have Lucas tackle Mascherano instead of someone else.

kyle. rafa is a wolly and a moron. every season he cries for more money after just spending millions on top of doing it every year then moans that his bosses are tight. he sounds like someone trying to cripple a business or an immature weed smoking teenager with a hoodie (just like the locals). only stupid liverpool fans would think that he is class. after spending more millions this season already he must win the league. but here is the clever bit. when he does not, because he is clueless he has an excuse . they wont let me spend 60 million or be like chelsea.
his only tactic is to play defensive in first leg which back fired recently.
wake up ya buncha livers

That’s the least of all the instructions Rafa gave to those two players…
Number one was score own goals so that both Brazil and Argentina would lose in the first round so that Liverpool will have both players home in time for tea before kickoff.
Number two was eat some mysterious chinese food and get food poisoning before their first games.
Number three was run as fast as possible towards the goalpost, head first and get stunned and sent back home to their personal doctors at LFC.
Number four was slip out of camp and go partying in Beijing until the wee hours and get sacked from their national team.
Number five was show the middle finger gestures at the chinese spectators right after kickoff in the first game. Then get sacked from team and start tarining with the others at LFC.
Number six was read some conspiracy theory online and get horribly sick. Then demand the LFC doctors takes care of them.
Number seven was….

Dan, if you knew anything at all, you would know that season after season, Rafa has had to sell half of what he spends. This is one of the reasons that he didn’t get Barry. Another thing is Man Utd spent £60m last season and didn’t sell anyone who was worth anything of value. Same applies to Chelsea (they are now linked to Kaka for the rediculous amount of money thet Ronaldo was valued at).
The conspiracy theory BS is ridiculous and Mr Comfort obviously obviously has nothing better to do.
Finally, Consp, I’ve never heard of the word ‘preparedness’. If you were talking about ‘preperation’, then I have to say that Benitez is a perfectionist and, if anything, this is his downfall. He looks at the minutest of details and plays to every little weakness of the opposition. As a Liverpool fan I, along with others, believe that sometimes we should be allowed to play our own game but it is that kind of preperation that won us the Champions League and FA cup. People ignorantly put these success down to luck, but it is mentallity, character and a never say die attitude that won both trophies.

Someone out there said that Rafa was among the top five managers in the world (Queue the Twilight zone music)
Rafa’s in the top five in the world for buying players only to sell them two seasons later.
Jan Kromkamp, Gabriel Paletta, Mark Gonzalez, Daniele Padelli, Antonio Nunez, Fernando Morientes, Mauricio Pellegrino, Alou Diarra, Luis Garcia, Momo Sissoko, Josemi, Peter Crouch, Bellamy, Just a few of the players brought only to be resold by Rafa because they did not fit in to his plan. Then why buy them?…If you have a plan you must know what type of player you’re looking for…. And for those for you who will say he resells them at a profit; if you buy a player for £1m pay him wages for £2m a year then sell him for £4m two years later you have loss£1m not gained £3m
Rafa is in the top five in the world when it comes to wasting the clubs money.
Is it just Rafa to blame, or does some of the blame lie with our scouts?…..We need to get this right. If the rumours are correct and Chelsea is going to get Kaka They will have taken a huge step up from us.
Now is the time to be buying quality players. That’s world class quality players and Downing and Barry do not fit the description. I ask you again why not just pay the £5m extra and buy Dimitar Berbatov instead of Robbie Keane? It is of little wonder Hicks does not trust Rafa
Rafa is in the top five in the world when it comes to not understanding Midfielders from Wingers.
Remember Steve Highway, and Ryan Giggs and Andrei Kanchelskis for Man Utd, Marc Overmars for Arsenal, more recently Duff and Robben, for Chelsea, (and the dream player for us) Messi of Barca. This is what we need.
Rafa is in the top five in the world when it comes to talk himself out of a job.
I truly believe that Rafa will be gone by the start of the next season, whether it is by getting the sack by Hick and Gillette, or DIC, but he will be gone. The reason. His constant airing of the clubs business in public. DIC will not stand of that
I also believe Hicks is also right when he asks why Parry has not taken Liverpool on a tour of China, South East Asia and India. We are talking a market of ten Billion + people there. All those shirts and bit we could be selling and instead Man Utd goes on tour there and now Chelsea. Man Utd has even started to play friendly in Africa.
Hick may not know F**k all about football but what he does not know about raising money and sponsorship could be written on a pin head.

Don’t know why everyone thinks it’s a stupid conspiracy because the thought occurred to me the moment I heard that Lucas had been sent off. Didn’t one of Standard Liege’s players do a similar thing so he could play against the Reds last week. Only a fool would remain in China to play in meaningless match when their club was due to play such an important game back home. The only down side was that it it Lucas coming home early and not Mascherano.

for the last three every player liverpool bought has come from the sale of another player. we might of spent 30 million this summer but we recouped 20million in sales which means we spent the same as most of the mid table teams and if you know your football like you think you do youll know that it was the exact same last season.
