It’s somewhat surprising to see that Sir Alex Ferguson has authorised the transfer of Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United to Arsenal. After all, the Gunners are one of the Red Devils’ main rivals for the Premier League title, is this a move that could come back to haunt the Scot? His players seem surprised by the switch as well, one of them certainly couldn’t see it coming.

Setanta report that Wes Brown was surprised to hear that the Frenchman was no longer on the books at Old Trafford.

“[I’m] very surprised, I have been with Mikael basically all the time I’ve been in the first team squad,” Brown told setantasports.com after scoring England’s first goal in a 2-2 draw with Czech Republic on Wednesday night.

“He is a great professional and it is sad to see him go. But he has not been playing many games at the moment and he wants to play, so all the best to him.

“If he wants to go I’m sure it will be good for him, as long as he is happy with it and plays games.

“It is [rare to move from Manchester United to Arsenal], but if you are going to go anywhere why not go to a good team and I’m sure that’s what Mikael will be thinking.”

Will Silvestre get more games for the Gunners than he would have done by staying at Man United? That largely depends on whether the likes of Clichy, Toure and Gallas stay fit for Arsenal, although it’s an extra body in defence and an experienced one at that. A wise move for the defender?
