Newcastle in the hunt for Arsenal defender – a match made in heaven?
by stresster on August 22nd, 2008 271 words | 11 commentsIt would be weird to see the Magpies becoming renowned for keeping clean sheets. For seasons on end, having a Newcastle defender in your fantasy team was akin to giving up the ghost, although their rearguard’s display against Manchester United hinted at better times to come for Keegan’s men.
News now greets us from Sky Sports that the Tyneside club are in the hunt for another defender, although they might have a fight on their hands to sign him! Philippe Senderos might be deemed surplus to requirements at Arsenal, although Milan and Newcastle both want to seemingly acquire his services, can this really be the case?
Keegan, though, has intimated that he could strengthen his defensive ranks with the addition of the 23-year-old after the player’s father claimed both Milan and the Magpies were keen to secure his services.
“Well, the lad has got two tremendous clubs to pick from if his dad’s right,” Keegan said on Sky Sports News.
“Yes, [we are looking for that sort of player in that position].
“We are looking for three more players to come in before the deadline, but they have got to be the right players.
“We definitely need another defender; there is no doubt about that.
“We are looking for a defender, a midfield player and possible one more forward.”
Surely the north-east is a more likely destination for a defender who possibly needs a fresh start after a series of errors have dented his confidence in the red and white of Arsenal? Newcastle fans, would you welcome a move for the Swiss player or do you think he’s too much of a liability?

Too much of a liability, it takes a very strong minded defender to succeed up here, we’ve seen too many players buckle under the pressure…..boumsong/ bramble/ cacapa, He’s a good player when he’s on his game and even though he would surely only be back up for taylor and collocini. i’m inclined to say no thank you,

Not keen on him myself. I personally think Coloccini and Taylor should be our regulars for 4 or 5 seasons. I’ve always though if Taylor had a good solid defender to play alongside he’d be a sound player.
I think Keegan would be better of buying a top left-back.

If we do sign him he will be an asset. He’s a good solid and young defender that can only get better. He would give us more options in a already fairly strong back line.

Well my first response was Noooooooooooo!
Granted i havent seen too much of Arsenal, being a Newcastle fan and all that. But when i have seen Senderos play for the Gunners, its like watching oil and water mix. The Gunners are a well oiled team these days and well Senderos can look a bit of a damp squid!
However my brother-in-law is a Gooner and he tells me the lad on his day looks invincible, however there are other moments when his timing is a bit off (ironic with him being Swiss, dont you think)
Wenger rarely makes a bad signing and even his so called flops sometimes go on to achieve great things at other clubs……Bentley, Larsson etc
As long as the fee is not too much ( £4m max) i am willing to reverse my initial response.

Oh no, not my choice at all – too error prone from what I have seen of him. What we do need is cover at left back.
Not sure KK wants him either, there was a naughty twinkle in his eye when he was asked the question!

Big fat no, he’s poor and not required in Toon.
Thankfully I believe this is a media only story with absolutely no substance at all.

Agree with Entertainers (though I think you mean a damp squib – squids are quite typically damp). He’s decent and young, and as we don’t have much experienced cover at CB I’d be happy to see him arrive. So long as we have enough left in the kitty for a CF, AM and LB.

he reminds me of bramble but if keegan can eradicate his errors which i think he has done with taylor who seems a solid player now then senderos can be one of the worlds top players though all the same if he goes to milan and he probably will i wont lose any sleep over it what we realy need is a creative mid

KK said one defender.
That will be a left-back. Preferably one who can play LB and centreback.
Admit it, you’ve been tooned!
