Newcastle United seem to have lost out to Italian giants AC Milan in the race to land Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos if reports in Italy are to be believed.
The Switzerland international is reported in the Italian press to have joined the Serie A club in a loan deal with an option for a permanent switch.
Magpies boss Kevin Keegan had eyed the 23-year-old as his defensive target, but it now appears that he will have to look elsewhere as the Giallorossi bolstered their backline despite having veteran Paolo Maldini and Kakha Kaladze fit.
Senderos will be reunited with former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini, who moved to San Siro on a free transfer at the end of the last season. (premiershiplatest.com)
This is quite a shocker. I think it’s fair to say that Senderos is not the most reliable centre-back in the Premier League and, whilst Milan are not involved in the Champions League this season, they are still one of the biggest clubs on the planet with a history built on a strong defence – so quite where this Swiss international fits in is beyond me! With Silvestre on board, Wenger can afford to let Senderos leave. Who knows? Maybe whilst on loan at the San Siro he could fulfill his potential and become a stable and solid defender. Senderos is a determined customer who always gives 100% – but he is also liable to some bad decision-making and more than the occasional misplaced pass. Are Gunners fans shocked to see Senderos linked with AC Milan?

Gutted. Wenger is panicking.

Senderos is a very good player. He has like ALL players made some mistakes, some of which have led to Arsenal conceding important goals, I have yet to see a defender who does not make a mistake.
Infact if you were to count up his costly errors and then tot up those made by William Gallas you may think differently. Senderos at least is willing to challenge for high balls, and wins a good number of them. He certainly isn’t a Tony Adams, but he is not alone in that.
He is generally pre-judged in his performances,by supporters who don’t attend games, and also by some that do, but don’t actually see what is happening on the pitch.
Milan possibly remember the central defensive pairing that holds the record for
most consecutive clean sheets in the ChampionsLeague……Still what do they Know?

Perhaps this loan spell will prove beneficial for big phil, maybe he will return (doubtful), and with some experience and confidence behind him.
James - August 25th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Thank god we got rid of that arsehole.
John Belfast! - August 26th, 2008 at 12:10 am
James u must be a p****! The young lad is only 23 and look what he has acheived both for his club and his country! When he came to England every top european club wanted him. Lucky, he chose Aresnal and lets be honest under his manager has developed into one of the best defenders in Europe. The guy didn’t have a spectatular previous season but he struggled with a few niggly injuries which prevented him from showing his potential throughout the year. I myself would be delighted to have him at my club which is Tottenaham!
The guys speaks 5 languages fluenty!
Great in aerial battles! (something Spurs lack)
good attitude!
Can score important goals!
Young!
Comoll! Do some negotiating with the former club and try to nab him on loan or outright! You must have a good relationship with him!
Fans should accept him if he does feel he would want to go to spurs! They took Campbell! Chances are it would even be on the cheap!
Do you spurs fans agree?
Mohd Fauzi - August 26th, 2008 at 2:43 am
The big big loses. What’s was Wenger done to Sanderos? I agreed with neil S. And why he sent him to AC, the club which took Flamini out from emirates? So what will happened soon? I’m so sad which was happened to Arsenal this season.

“Has developed into one of the best defenders in Europe” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAH
You cant make that shit up. John Belfast is high.
Harry Barracuda - August 26th, 2008 at 6:41 am
The first two comments are laughable. Senderos has been a liability in every big game in which he’s played. I’d rather have (perm any two from) Gallas, Djourou, Toure and Silvestre ANY day.
He’s as mobile as a lamp post and has the positional awareness of Stevie Wonder, so how on earth does this weaken our side?
Plus it’s a loan, so if he does turn out to be OK in Serie A, we can flog him at a profit.
Excellent business all round. He’s had loads of chances and does not cut the mustard.
Ad - August 26th, 2008 at 7:41 am
I’m actually shocked that Wenger isn’t going to continue flogging the dead horse a la Eboue and let Senderos stay on the payroll for years whilst under achieving and costing us incredibly important games in the process.
Think we need a young replacement, as Silvestre certainly won’t be at the club performing at his best for a long time.
ON another note I am very very concerned as to our finishing position this season. We fluked a win against West Brom and now failed to beat a clearly inferior side at Fulham. Let’s just hope we can hang on the the 2 goal lead with Twente but I can seriously see us finishing 7th or 8th this season, perhaps playing in the UEFA cup next year maybe even missing out on that. I am embarrassed to be an Arsenal fan so far this year. We need people to come in fast in the next 6 days!!!

Hope the door doesn’t hit is arse on the way out.
Just not good enough. Cygan, Linighan, SenDROS

funny how he is good enuff for AC milan but Arsenal are just too good for him.
Funny that!!
You Arse fans are so deluded!!!
Life Long Gooner - August 26th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Serious Senderos is a loss in I would like his 100% effort win or lose to be in planted into Gallas or should it be be spelt Galloss.
I would rather have Senderos than Gallas any time.
Having said that the biggest loss with no compensation was Flamini and it shows.
As for Hleb end product was poor, Silva was slow, Lehman made more mistakes then Senderos.
We are a weak team and I would love to see the likes of Parker or Noble to sure up the midfield.
Forgot to mention my favorite Eboue what a w…… I would love to play and get paid to role around, Wonder how he would survive non-league football.
He should go not Senderos.
Marco - August 26th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I’m not including you all, but most off the comments come from a total bunch of wankers! Just before the summer break i remember everyone calling for Arsene to get rid of Senderos, me incl. Now he has done it and you all diss him Piss off man, tell me one game, one game when Senderos really played outstanding? Not average or below average. Never! Why keep average players? Wake up and realize very few of you idiots have any real knowledge of soccer, and even less off what you say and not say! You all want quality players at the club, all want big signings all want top notch centre backs blah blah blah! Well wake up! Senderos is none of those things! So why be sentimental about it? I am a gunner and will always be. I just sometimes wish the invincible season never happened because it has attracted a bunch of true idiot supporters who know nothing about being a gunner! Yes i agree, criticise wenger, criticise the board, do whatever it takes to improve this club, but dont be an arse and think you know anything because you read soccer gossip and some “Big name” gets linked with us and then suddenly the blogs overflow with IDIOTS claiming to know that player and want hi at all cost. Piss of all of you and go be a Spud or a Chelsea supporter, leave ManU alone cause they dont even deserve the likes of you! Some of you make me ashamed of being a gunner sometimes, and that hurts. All calling for Wengers head! Whats that about? Yet none of you pricks have the foggiest fucking idea who we will get to replace him. Let me think, someone great like Big Sam? What about master Ramos, he seems to be have it all figured out! Stop comparing Arsenal to Chelsea and Spurs and Manu and all the other teams, because this is The Arsenal, not anything else!
Aaron - August 26th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Senderos is a shocking defender huge mistake by Milan. List of Ac defenders: Baresi, Maldini, Nesta, Senderos? Terrible. I wouldnt start him for Leyton Orient
h - August 26th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Marco,
Senderos holds the Champions league record for clean sheets, now while he didnt do that alone, his lack of confidence is what caused him to make mistakes, mostly in big games against Dogbag who incidentally smashed every CD around the country that year, if he is gone for good its a loss, no doubt. He is too young to have gieven up on, anyone thinking otherwise is sadly deluded. Eboue on the other hand is a disgrace, no doubt and its a shame hes still around.
Galway Gooner - August 26th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Last year Senderos played in 12 league games for Arsenal. In those 12 games Arsenal collected 2.33 points per game, kept clean sheets in 58% of them and conceeded an average of 0.41 goals per game.
Now look at Toure 28 games, 2.17 points per game, 35% clean sheets and 0.85 goals per game and Gallas 30 games, 2.03 points, 36% clean sheets and 0.86 goals conceeded per game and tell me that Phil was the weak link.
This is a senseless piece of business by Arsenal.
Paul O - August 26th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Senderos is a liability as his reaction time is too slow which results in errors. Basically he can’t think fast enough for the Premiership. His game is more suited to Serie A. So, even if his tenure with Milan is successful it doesn’t necessarily mean he will be a success at Arsenal. Shame really as he has all the physical attributes to be a top defender bar the pace and brain, which are major omissions. A top defender can do without one or the other but not both. Tony Adama never had pace, but he had the brain. The question now is who do we get to replace him, as we still need a big strong central defender who can put his head where it hurts. Silvestre is not the answer.
guy fawkes - August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
when eboue was a right back, he was very good; so good that in d prescence of sagna, wenger couldnt give him up to the bench but couldnt find a better ptn 4 im. To be serious, i wouldnt say senderos is BAD cos hes still young. yould rather call him ‘bad but gettin better season by season’. Gooners, we are complainin about depth and dis guy just gave away 4 defensive midfielders and 2 defenders. this season will b a disaster if we dont get at least two new players.
TheGlory - August 26th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Marco – August 26th, 2008 at 11:01 am – tell me one game, one game when Senderos really played outstanding – Talk about deluded!!!!!
” When Campbell was out injured in both 2005 and 2006, he came in and was outstanding, particularly in our record-breaking run to the Champions League final. ”
yeah that the great champs league record set by the greats of milan you know – maldini, nesta and co. and has not been beaten since it was set apart from a defense that contained a crappy sendeross. Must have flucked that 10 game champs league clean sheet then. And for that matter Phil and Toure did it with 2 fullbacks playing out of pos (eboue and Flamini).
This is the reason i say Arse fans are deluded – when carlo ancelotti who has one Seria A and Champs League is prepared to have Phill in the squad, stupid armchair supporters always think they know best.
esp Arse fans
Paul O - August 26th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
And in response to Galway Gooner, it is not the quantity, but quality. Senderos was found wanting in all the big games, Torres and Drogba (to name but two) have made him kook like a chimp in past games. There is no point in playing well in the run-up to the finale only to fall short when it really matters. I take your point re Toure and Gallas though, they can’t play together but are both brilliant if you have a big strong no-nonsense defender along side them.
Galway Gooner - August 26th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
PaulO – Drogba scored two in ten minutes against Gallas and Toure last season, does this mean that they are not good enough either? Drobga was possibly the most effective striker in the world when he scored two against a 21 year old Senderos. Top defenders across Europe couldnt cope with Drogba yet we murder Senderos for the same? To me it strikes of double standards. And on Adams, when he was the same age as Phil is now wasnt he in jail????
stu - August 26th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
this is retarded Every Arsenal fan was begging Wenger to get rid of him. Now hes gone theres a major crisis. For f**k sake Gooners make up your mind!!!!!
I personally believe he is just not good enough for the premiership. To be a success in the PREM as a defender you have to be either quick, strong or good in the air which Senderos is not!!!!!!!!!!! And you are all stupid if you disagree because Senderos ,although i like him gets bullied by the likes of Drogba and crouch which you would not see with the likes of Vidic ,Carvalho, terry,Nesta Etc
TheGlory - August 26th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
what as slow as hypia was, terry is as slow as fuck and i can remember him making similar mistakes to sendy.
Nesta – funny that how he shares the record number of clean sheets kept in champs league with a donkey like sendeross!!
What exposed sendy most was the fact we were a very attacking team who leave their defence exposed regularly.
Unlike chelsea or pool who protect their defense more. Phill would have been a bigger hit in a team with that style of play. thats why he is going to be big for milan but fans like stu and marco cant see it but galliani the chief executive for AC milan can. Hmmm that Galliani doenst no fuck all does he

WENGER SHOUILD BUY A DECENT PLAYER NOW AND GET RID OF ADEBAYOU.
Lman - August 26th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
why are you all crying over this. He his just on a year long loan with an option of a permanent deal. We all know italy has the best defence and he his just going there to lear and by next year comes back to replace our cap gallas and he can play along side toure and can be great like they were during the 05 and 06. and for now i think we have better back up and can do with him out there learning more. we have Djouru and song i seriously rate this two more than him. So dont demand AW for this deal its a good one either for him to learn and prove him self and come back to claim his place or he goes for good if he can not be good in milan
lennie g - August 26th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
Sorry folks I still it wish it was Gallas going instead of Sendros, I can’t help remembering when Tony Adams was called a donkey by everybody and he didn’t end up a bad player did he.
Thetford Yid - August 26th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
he is blatantly shit anyway.
Oscar - August 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Arsenal have signed swiss player he is number 23 look on wikipediea in the players sections.
bob - August 26th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
It isn’t a crisis but Senderos has a lot of potential. He has shown he CAN show up in big games (Champs League run, for instance). But he also has made big mistakes, albeit to strikers like Drogba and Torres who aren’t exactly chumps. Still at 23 I think he could come good which mainly means become more consistent. If Arsene let’s him go for eight million pounds total which has been reported, ok, but I wouldn’t be sad if he came back.
