According to this source, Wenger has decided he simply MUST have this midfielder after seeing his side lose following a shocking display at Craven Cottage.
Arsenal are reportedly back in for Xabi Alonso, but may will have to pay £16million due to the terms of the Spaniard’s move to Liverpool.
The Gunners look desperately short in midfield after the departures of Gilberto Silva, Mathieu Flamini, Lassana Diarra and Alex Hleb, and The Times claims they will revive their interest in Alonso after their defeat to Fulham at the weekend.
Arsenal made a £10million bid for the midfielder some three weeks ago and are believed to have agreed terms with the player, but their offer was turned down.
However, The Times reports that, after such a ‘lacklustre’ performance at Craven Cottage – in which Arsene Wenger was forced to play Denilson and Emmanuel Eboue in the centre of midfield – he needs to strengthen. (football365.co.uk)
I think it’s fair to say that over the first 180 minutes of the season the Gunners have hit top form for about 10-15 minutes. Hopefully Cesc will be back soon to help beef up the midfield but Arsenal will still need the likes of Alonso to play alongside Fabregas as Denilson continues to grow in stature. While the Brazilian may be a fine prospect, he is probably not quite ready to play week in, week out. Xabi would be a perfect fit for the club and I think the valuation placed by Liverpool is pretty fair. Do Arsenal fans feel that the experience of Alonso would help the side greatly, or should they stick with Denilson in midfield?
