Liverpool move in for £14m Premier League star
by Mr Comfort on August 25th, 2008Rafa Benitez will have been impressed by one member of the Middlesbrough line-up over the weekend and apparently this has led to speculation that Liverpool are considering making a big-money bid for the England man.
Why not join the debate at the COS forum?
Middlesbrough will resist any offers from Liverpool for winger Stewart Downing.
The £14million-rated England player is back on Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez’s wanted list as he weighs up his final moves prior to the transfer window closing next week. (Daily Mail)
Downing has started the season with a bang. He followed up a man-of-the-match performance against Spurs with another exciting run-out at Anfield. He was unable to prevent his side from losing in the dying seconds but would have done enough to once again bring him to the forefront of Rafa’s mind. The left winger is now the longest-serving player at the Riverside but he has made comments that seem to suggest that if a move came in from a team who could offer him a higher level of progression then he would consider it. Liverpool are, of course, just such a club. Do Anfield fans think that Rafa should consider bringing him in?

Has Mr Lenor / Comort just finished doing the laundry? this rumour is days old.
chris - August 25th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
rafa should of not of bought dossena or robbie and should of brought silvia and sergio ramos and captdevillia
sorry4chris - August 25th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
hahaha….chris…i fancy those statements but be fair….. dossena is better than the one we have right now and even for robbie… doesnt mean he cant score…silva will never come ….trust me…even for another 10 years….ramos?? to liverpool??? not quite a news.
Donavan Ried - August 25th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Downing is another overated player worth £7-8m tops
pedro perez - August 25th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
rafa always seems to know what he is on about….but keane has not scored yet.
i expect babel to be even better than last season, and that al zhar… guy looks good… but about transfers…
barry - i doubt will come! (could yet go arsenal)…..talking of which arsenal want x.alonso, i think rafa is mad to sell alonso, he started gerrads goal against middlesborough. he is quality.
rumours with good source i heard-
downing tempted with move… and rafinha to come in january 2009. Riera looks bound to Everton even though he prefers Liverpool.
anyway - i am sure liverpool to push far this year for title, but as chelsea have improved, i could only see them end 2ND.
bye
fedr1 - August 25th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Quaresma, Quaresma, Quaresma.
Benitez out also the end of the season or hopefully sooner along with Parry and the yanks. DIC in full control bringing in Murinho and yes, I am a liverpool fan.
kevin - August 25th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
we dont need a left sided midfielder when we have got babbel. we need a right sided midfielder either quaresma or shaun wright phillips. hes up for sale apparently . rafa needs to get this spot on now. no messing about who da flip is riera lol. please let the toffess have him lmao.
James - August 25th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Yes. I also hope Mourinho falls out with the Inter owners and becomes next Liverpool boss. At least he would buy some quality players and some of his former players might also be tempted. Not too sure its going to happen though…
james - August 25th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
You lot make me embarassed to be a liverpool fan..silvia and captdevillia? a few european championships matches on the tele and you start picking random names out the hat, and you even spell the way david pleat talks.
alonso didn’t start the move for “gerrads” goal either, it was great play by aurelio who unlike alonso wasn’t complete wank for the entire game.
james - August 25th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
f***ing mourinho? are you insane? once again…embarassing.
0500Silva - August 25th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
yea alonso is a wank…can’t believe we kept the cunt. Hasn’t played a decent game for 3 years and we go around parading his name as world class…what bs….if he was world class then Gerrard must be Universal or something….beep, when Mascherano is back then he’ll be a bench warmer anyway
oh dear - August 25th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
“no messing about who da flip is riera lol. please let the toffess have him lmao”
why don;t you do a bit of research? maybe you could send your scouts to a few of his games, watch a few videos of him playing….you know just generally take an interest and track him for a year or two then you’ll know….or you could type some worthless idiotic comment on the internet and “lol” about it. numpty.
FlyOnTheWall - August 25th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I agree with james here. Seriously, did you guy just start following football a couple of weeks back?! Ramos is one hell of an overrated player, with and ego to match, and capdevila is really just a random name. And given silva’s reluctance to leave, well, it just makes me laugh.
And although i think Alonso has yet to reach his peak, i’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say that all this transfer talk is, in some way, affecting him.
Its nice to see a player of Alonso’s calibre wanting to stay rather than leave just because he might think he’s not wanted. I’m sure once the window closes and all talk about transfers have ceased, then his head would really be in it and we’ll start seeing the best of him, and the team, given the return of players like mascherano and babel as well.
fedr1 - August 25th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
James,
Murinho is a far better manager than Benitez by along way. All you fans saying ‘in Rafa we trust’ get your head out of the sand (Istanbul 2005) and open your eyes.
No mate, not insane I just see it the way it is instead of not being stupidly biased. You lot are the embarrassing factor. Oh and yes, we could of well afforded Quaresma, he’s had £180 million in 4 years to spend and who does he bring in? Kuyt, Pennant, Benyanoun Intandje and Arbeloa all average players. Pathetic!!!!
FlyOnTheWall - August 25th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Mourinho to liverpoll!?!?! Never in a million years!!!!
You guys are the sort who would probably be clamouring for Steve McClaren to be the next pool manager if Twente beat arsenal.
Viera, zlatan, maicon = overrated players.
Inter milan = overrated team.
Mourinho = Overrated manager.
Desy - August 25th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Nice one Chris. Sergio Ramos would have been an excellent signing. We should have used that spare £35M that the Americans have floating about on prising Spain’s biggest young talent from the biggest team in the world. Get your head out your arse fellow Liverpool fans.
We dealing in mid-price transfers and maybe one or two big ones dependent on who we sell. Silva has just signed a new contract at Valencia so he had little interest in coming anyway and between you and me he’s too weak to withstand the Premiership at the moment. Give your head a wobble Chris.
PS: Alonso = Overrated. Yes at his best he does lovely cross field balls but who do they go to? Dirk Kuyt. What’s the point? No goals, no assists, no point. At least Barry is versatile, works well with Gerrard, can score, cross and shot. So he doesn’t try and chip the goalie from the halfway line every 5 games the Premiership is about stats and versatility something that Alonso doesn’t have. In the keep ball European game Alonso’s the man but in the hustle and bustle of Wigan away he’s useless.

Donavan Ried - August 25th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
kevin - August 25th, 2008 at 10:11 pm : there’s a real good reason why we need aLeft winger on the left and not Babel. Babel is a right winger. A Friend of mine (Man Utd fan) said when we played Man Utd lastseaso that how they were going to beat us was to stop Babel from cutting back in on his right foot, and thats what Man Utd did, the rest is history…….fedr1 - August 25th, 2008 at 10:39 pm..you are right my friend he is…..FlyOnTheWall - August 25th, 2008 at 10:40 pm..Mourinho to liverpoll!?!?! Never in a million years!!!!….Had we offered him the job at the end of last season iI think he would have taken it…..James - August 25th, 2008 at 10:13 pm …….Yes. I also hope Mourinho falls out with the Inter owners and becomes next Liverpool boss. Me too James, me too….In Rafa WE trust,No Longer!
Donavan Ried - August 25th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
typo that’s Last season, not lastseaso
Kerim - August 25th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
All your comments are pathetic… Look at the squad rafa inherited and look at todays squad including the reserves. Agger, reina, skrtel, masherano, babel, torres, keane, alonso are world class and I think dossena is perfect for the prem. All in all we do need a left winger but we are a quality team. All you numpties who want a team of galaticos should forget about supporting our wonderful team and play championship manager to acquire there far fetched aqusitions.
Poolian - August 25th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
3 words about what liverpool need
wingers wingers wingers
in an ideal world you want another steven gerrard too
a top winger and a midfeilder that scores goals and you set
i really feel those tight wad yanks are to blame and youre club is scraping the barrel now
you only got robbie keane because of crouch and a couple of other sales
rafa really is a strong guy i would have left the club by now in a rage
you cant rely on torres all season and that mid field is not as sharp as previous seasons thats for sure
danny pacheco's left nut - August 26th, 2008 at 12:14 am
anyone - and that’s ANYONE - that wants rafa out of liverpool is either daft, mental or a fan of another team - FUCKIN’ RETARDS!
redeye - August 26th, 2008 at 1:54 am
whos singing “xabis our man” now?!, twats! i said 3 months ago that yes, we should grab Barry, at whatever price, for what is the cost of the final jigsaw piece? priceless!. GB has continued where he left off last season, solid as a rock, in fact hes even better! and to do all this with the crap hurled at him from both sides, is a truley proffessional display from an insparational footballer, and hes a skipper, and he scores goals from inside the 6 yd box, and he owns midfield like it should be. I’ll never forgive raffa if he fucks this up, hes got a week. any other signing is a waste of money. sell alonso to the gunners for what ever they want to pay and bring in a real midfielder.
ben - August 26th, 2008 at 6:36 am
cost of the final jigsaw place?
please….
u have a great team centrally… why buy more central players? uve got mascherano and gerrard cm’s and alonso back up, where is barry fitting in?
Cant only play one lone striker all season, its surely gonna be keane and torres up front, meaning only 2cm’s
u need wide players lol, benayoun is underrated, and a good squad player, aurelio is a decent full back, and babel is versatile. thats 3 decent players in 4 positions, u need more, at least one decent full back and a world class winger, philippe lahm , and simao/joaquin..
come on ffs, torres needs service . u sign these 2 positions, class players, there is ur jigsaw complete and a realistic shot at the tile.
oh rafa rafa rafa
steven - August 26th, 2008 at 8:52 am
i think benitez should sign diego capel for the left and quaresma for the right. he should sell benayoun, pennant, finnan, itandje, aurelio, kuyt and voronin and also give more playing time to el zhar, ngog and insua who are ready for more first team action
steven - August 26th, 2008 at 8:54 am
maybe aswell, we should sell arbeloa and buy someone better as an attacking right back like rafinha
Imo - August 26th, 2008 at 9:03 am
Guys Guys Guys! hehe. lets not complain..if you wana complain, go play for liverpool.
I am unsure if Rafa will go back to 4-2-3-1 formation..that formation was good. however since he got Keane wich i think is a good buy, think about it ..if Toress gets injured atleast liverpool will have another top striker(this guy scores atleast 15 goals a season), give them time to gel.
Also they do need a winger(left) because babel is good but to greedy to cross the ball in the box.he is better when cumin in and scoring( he scored 8-10 goals last season), benayoun- piece of shit tho.
all liverpool needs is a barry or riera..Kyt is actually doing well on the rite.
and NGOG looks potent.
Lets just see what happens - at the moment we have a better than good squad..just missing someting ..and hopefully soon be filled.
Liverpool 4 life
Jake - August 26th, 2008 at 10:18 am
I think Liverpool are almost there, we need about two players then we will seriously challenge for the title. We need a left winger and perhaps a more attacking right back - Arbeloa is okay, but not world class, we need someone like Ramos without the ego, and preferrably English.
I also say that if Rafa doesn’t win anything this season he will almost certainly be fired, but as for a replacement, I wouldn’t want Mourinho taking over. I think it will be someone like Mark Hughes or maybe Roy Keane who takes over, someone with experience but room for improvement, not that Roy Keane has that much experience, but he has done a good job at Sunderland and bought in some players, and good players like Malbranque, Cisse etc.

El Mundo Deportivo has reported that Catalan outfit Espanyol have reached an agreement with Premiership giants Liverpool for the sale of winger Albert Riera.
The deal is believed to be worth €9 million upfront, plus €3 million based on the player’s performance, totalling the €12 million that Espanyol were holding out for.
Both clubs are now working on the finer details of the transfer and once it is completed, the 26 year old will fly out to Merseyside to pen a four year contract with the option of a fifth.
Espanyol president Daniel Sánchez Llibre revealed that the Blanc-i-Blau will have to dish out 30% of the transfer fee from the sale to Girondins Bordeaux as part of the agreement when the winger joined the Catalan side from the French outfit.
Llibre has also assured that the club have already begun looking for Riera’s replacement and a possible option is River Plate’s Olympic gold medallist, Diego Bounanotte. The 20 year old would only cost Los Periquitos around the region of €4 million and El Mundo believes that both parties have already made contact to begin negotiations.
So Reira set to sign i think it will be a very clever signing.
Allahs boot - August 26th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Lets stop all this shit and get behind the team. What we lack is an explosive winger to replace harry kewell.Personally i hope it is quaresma. If arjen robben, pires,c ronaldo can win the epl for their teams then a similar player is all that we are missing. whoever we get i will still support. Already the signs are good,we have a full squad,we have players still to sell(finnan, itandje, voronin, pennant),and i have never seen liverpool chase a win like they have in the last 2 games, since rafa has been in charge.Lucas, babel and mascherano are now all back.if we stay away from injuries then we will win the epl this year.ynwa

Let me start by say I’m one of those who are not keen on Gareth Barry, but let’s say I’m wrong. You say” we should grab Barry, at whatever price, for what is the cost of the final jigsaw piece? priceless!” Priceless, £18m, £25m, £40m may be £70m? I could be wrong about Barry’s impact for Liverpool but I am sure about one thing. We should not pay more that £12m for Gareth Barry, for once we start doing this EVERY player Liverpool are linked with will have one price for other clubs and a inflated price for us. Just look at the other teams act towards Chelsea in the transfer market if you want further proof.

Allahs boot - August 26th, 2008 at 12:36 pm…
.LOL, Sorry not your comments, The Name.LOL!
We Need A Left winger for sure, but I would also like to see Bastian Schweinsteiger at Liverpool. can score goals from open play ,set pieces, great corner and free kick taker, has vision and a great paster of the ball, links well with other players and his contract is up on 30 June 2009. would be a great signing for us
Ross A - August 26th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
