That Everton have had a horrific summer is a given. Up until yesterday, they hadn’t signed anyone, despite watching a carousel of players waltz through the exit. Insult has been added to injury with winger Albert Riera holding out for a move to Liverpool, rather than signing for Everton, and now this; apparently Newcastle are sniffing around the very player that Moyes has been after all summer!
The Sunderland Echo is bringing us word that Stephane M’Bia, long time quarry of Davie Moyes, could also be high on Kevin Keegan’s wishlist:
Newcastle United are weighing up a bid for Geremi’s Cameroon team-mate Stephane Mbia.
But French club Rennie’s valuation of the defensive midfielder, who can also play at right-back, could scupper Kevin Keegan’s hopes of signing the 22-year-old.Everton are already understood to have had a £6m bid for Mbia rejected, while he has also interested Arsenal. (Sunderland Echo)
Obviously Newcastle are operating under the same tight-arsed transfer policy that Everton have been labouring under all summer…which basically leaves this whole thing open for a lightning raid by Arsenal.

Toon fan here, i don’t understand why Everton is seen as such an unattractive place for players. They are in Europe, have performed well in the league recently, and already have some decent players there. Yet they continually struggle to attract the top names. Feel sorry for them really. The papers try to make out as if we have the same problem, but so far we have only been snubbed by Modric and Woodgate. All of the other player speculation is just that, and has been proven so in one way or another.
Anyway, the papers haven’t a clue who we are chasing so i doubt this story has any substance. The days of Freddy Shepherd are long gone and everything is kept well and truly hush hush nowadays.

Sam, we have only been snubbed by Tiago, Moutinho and M’bia have both publicly stated they want to come to Everton, not a case of players not wanting Everton, its a case of Everton not willing to pay the fee, and if you want to compete and buy better players, you sometimes have to pay over the top fees. Not really bothered about this M’bia, he’s average at best

A lot’s been down to ‘middle men’ screwing us over, agents of players we were keen on were promising this and that – only looking for the best deal for themselves and we’ve been a victim of it. It’s just been one of them summers unfortunately, hopefully it’s a one-off. Good luck to the Toon this season Sam.

Sam, Modric never snubbed the toon, the deal was in place and he was ready to sign, in fact he was in the malmaison on he quayside when he got a call from spuds and went down there and duely signed. Hence Mike Ashleys comments about hating spurs and always have, etc. Woodgate is a different story, the toon were unaware he was availible, and by the time we got a chance to speak to him he told the toon he’d already given his word he’d sign for spurs.
Plus word is middlesbro didn’t make it public knowledge untill woodgate said he’d join spurs therefore they knew he’d knock the toon back, just another attempt by a small town team trying to usurp the big lads
