Liverpool SEAL deal for £9.5m STAR!
by Mr Comfort on August 26th, 2008According to this source, the deal for this Spanish winger is done and Liverpool have themselves a pretty good winger at their disposal!
Why not join the debate at the COS forum?
El Mundo Deportivo has reported that Catalan outfit Espanyol have reached an agreement with Premiership giants Liverpool for the sale of winger Albert Riera.
The deal is believed to be worth €9 million upfront, plus €3 million based on the player’s performance, totalling the €12 million that Espanyol were holding out for.
Both clubs are now working on the finer details of the transfer and once it is completed, the 26 year old will fly out to Merseyside to pen a four year contract with the option of a fifth.
Espanyol president Daniel Sánchez Llibre revealed that the Blanc-i-Blau will have to dish out 30% of the transfer fee from the sale to Girondins Bordeaux as part of the agreement when the winger joined the Catalan side from the French outfit.
Llibre has also assured that the club have already begun looking for Riera’s replacement and a possible option is River Plate’s Olympic gold medallist, Diego Bounanotte. The 20 year old would only cost Los Periquitos around the region of €4 million and El Mundo believes that both parties have already made contact to begin negotiations. (goal.com)
The source seems to suggest this is a done and dusted deal and, if so, the red half of Merseyside has beaten off Everton in the pursuit of the Espanyol man. Many believe that one of the things missing from Rafa’s squad is some more free-flowing attacking wingers, they have Ryan Babel but not much else in that department, aside from some very promising youngsters. Do Liverpool fans think this is a good signing, if indeed this is confirmed to be accurate?

Forgive me, I have a condition that never allows me to finish sentences. Anyway, I think Reira is a good signing because
2 years late - August 26th, 2008 at 11:40 pm
I think Mark Gonzales would make a great signing for the left wing, he’s been playing really well in Spain.
Oh wait a minute, Oh bollox, I’m 2 years too late again!
ynwa - August 27th, 2008 at 12:03 am
I thank god we have him. Will stegnthen our left with hight, power and skill.
Now we can afford to have kuyt and benny on the bench!
Scott B - August 27th, 2008 at 1:00 am
I try and try to justify keeping kuyt and benny on the field, but outside of dirk’s relentless work ethic and benny’s knack for scoring nice goals in the meaningless games, it’s time to move forward. Interested to see what kind of lineup Rafa throws out in the next couple EPL games. Does he still play 4-4-2? If so, does Alonso stay alongside Gerrard, or do they move Masch back in? Might be best to move Gerrard behind Torres, and keep Masch and Alonso in the midfield, and bench Keane (although it’s early and the risks and publicity of benching the ireland international might be severe).
fowler9 - August 27th, 2008 at 1:34 am
i think riera is a good player but not a great player .he can beat his man every time with great skill but his end product is poor plus his goal scoring record is not great.i think he is in the garcia mold makes the difficult skills look easy and makes the simple ones look hard.I hope to god im wrong about this but i think we are in for a frustrating season watching him………p.s. i hope some one makes a bid for alonso this week so we can finally get barry. i was his biggest fan when he signed but for the last 2 seasons he has been very poor.this season is only 2 games old and he is starting 2 fucking piss me off.came on against sunderland and won the game started against bro he was the worst player on the pitch by a mile.barry is steady very good every week never poor great goal assists and scores his fair share of goals and if u think im wrong watch the game this weekend.when villa are under the cosh and the ball is played to barry he keeps it holds it up never gives it away cheaply can the same be said of i want 2 shoot from 50 yards every week alonso so was rb really that mad trying 2 sign barry
lfc - August 27th, 2008 at 1:48 am
excellant now we can settle into a formation that can challange the big spenders. You’ll see a similar formation as last year with

hemanta - August 27th, 2008 at 1:58 am
speechless,I’m not big fan of him and if we are just traking chances randomly for a winger then a much classier winger could have been choosen for the job.I’m talking about joaquin atleast no one will say money is spent on the wornd man.any way rafa the man to spend we’re to face the pain.
Scott B - August 27th, 2008 at 2:51 am
Was that yoda (hemanta) putting in his word? I’m not even sure what that means, it’s hard to even assess what was meant. As for LFC’s comment above, I like the lineup, it’s a good move to put Gerrard back w/Torres, but do you think Keane will take kindly (or be successful) as an outside midfielder?
slicky4 - August 27th, 2008 at 3:52 am
to FOWLER9, i aint fallin out wiv a fellow MIGHTY SCOUSER, but XABI is quality. the last 2 seasons he’s been plagued by injuries, this season is 3 games old, TORRES hasnt set the league alight yet has he??? THEY ARE BOTH SPANISH, EURO WINNERS, LONGER BREAK THAN THE REST OF THE SQUAD!!! do you see the link??? give it a few weeks, then they are back up to speed. even STEVIE G has said he isnt up to speed yet. you can see in games that their minds are focused, but the movement and passing isnt there yet, its a well known saying “you learn to walk before you can run”. all im saying is the feet are trying the killer balls and the passing but the mind and body aint in unison yet. its early doors and we are playing poorly, but sheer grit and determination is getting us through games. that winning mentality goes along way in a season, builds up morale. plus shows the nature of the squad. the lads from the olympics are back aswell now, which bodes well to the squad, more competition for places. To another point i agree with fellow MIGHTY SCOUSERS we need more width, BABEL is the only player ive seen hug the touchline and be good coming inside or outside. in the future he’ll play more up front. BENAYOUN is skillful and dangerous but seems to me to not notice the simple pass n move. KUYT it isnt his position but he gives 110% in a game, his non stop attitude and determination is a must for a team, same as STEVIE G, and he does score important goals. you can see in him that it doesnt matter if he’s playing in goal or up front, he’ll always give 110%. PENNANT so much potential but to show it in 2 or 3 games a season at this club, just aint good enough(HARRY KEWELL, DJBRILL CISSE, BELLAMY, LE TALLEC, CHEYROU, PHIL BABB, RONNIE ROSENTAL, TORBEN PICNIK, JOSEMI, ETC ETC ETC) BARRY 18million i dont think so, but any rival team is going to over price a player. he would be a good addition to the squad, he can play CB, LB, DCM,CM,LM. versatility enough said. id prefer QUARESMA to riera, he tore us apart in porto on BOTH wings. versatility again. BUT what do i know, ive only played the game as boy and man at a high level in amateur footie. im 34 now and still goin strong.
K1 - August 27th, 2008 at 6:10 am
Guy we(liverpool fans) are all happy dat left winger is back 2 liverpool squad.he will partner with keane torres babel at d front 2 deliver us d goal.i think it’s a good signing of d season 4 rafa.so kuyt$benny will try and help us 2 maintain d bench.
redsfan - August 27th, 2008 at 6:16 am
Riera is crap
Ziyaad - August 27th, 2008 at 6:57 am
Alonso is so poor, he should be shipped off immediately. Every corner kick he took failed to clear the first defender against Middelsborough. He is dam pathetic, and doesnt seem to have the strong kind of mentality.
That first season alonso and Garcia played really well, after that they were poor.
spiker - August 27th, 2008 at 7:00 am
good signing
shanks - August 27th, 2008 at 7:06 am
riera couldn’t make it at city so hows he gonna suddenly improve to make us challenge for the title? We should be signing quality wingers not rejects, how are we expected to challenge the likes of chelski and the other lot? we need D.I.C. to come in soon and pay for the quality wingers we need, so we can get back to our rightful position at the top of the league!!!!!
anonymous - August 27th, 2008 at 7:32 am
not better than kewell let alone gonzalez, pennant or kuyt.
Is just another second rate signing by that joke Benitez
We need a new manager badly.
roders - August 27th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Don’t blame it on Rafa the Gaffa, blame it on the cunts on the board- the ones with the wallets…they only give us enough money to spend on mediocre players- we dont have the financial luxuries that manure and chavsi have….
Diehard Red - August 27th, 2008 at 8:35 am
“Shanks” just because Riera couldn’t make it at City doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. Mascherano couldn’t make it at West Ham, are you saying he’s a bad player? Give the man a chance and if you’re right (which you probably will be) then we can all say he was another dud.
Dom - August 27th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Not impressed. Babel is our man for the left. We need a right winger, Queresma would have been the best choice!
Im losing faith with rafa!
tcguanz - August 27th, 2008 at 9:15 am
I prefer pennant rather to this guy. At least Pennant has this love for the red, and usually these kind of players will perform in big games
calvo - August 27th, 2008 at 9:21 am
shanks,i agree that he mite not be the answer as i didnt rate him at man city and what i saw of him in la liga didnt make me jump out of seat and say lets get him,but lets wait and see.but i cant agree with the back to our rightful position quote how can that be said when its been nearly 20 years!arsenal lay more claim to that statement than you lot at the moment.and if you all feel that the board dont give enuff money then maybe rafa shud be shrewder at getting players…like wenger as ive said b4 rafa has had money to spend and quite alot actually, seems you all forgot last season expenditure!and still no trophies.u can give all the money u can 2 a manager but if he cant buy the rite players and manage them to win then its the managers fault.d.i.c or not rafa has had the cash.
Aman Ramdeyal(Liverpool Fan) - August 27th, 2008 at 10:08 am
Good day all. I think he is a good signing. We needed a left winger and we have one, now we need a right winger. Lets hope we get one.
Ben - August 27th, 2008 at 10:09 am
I think it would be a good signing, he is a left winger and that is what we need, what i am worries about is he didnt do to well at City when he was there, but they say he did impress and has improed vastly since then! I hope so! we all know what our record for signing wingers is!
kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 10:10 am
hmm everyone bangs on about quaresma i wonder why rafa didnt spend 30 million on podolski and schweinsteiger, they bth proved at the euroes they can play against top quality opposition and having them either side of torres with gerrard in behind would have been great
kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
i m in agreement with fowler9, the guy seems toknow his football, i ve watched riera on youtube
lotsa of skill trickery no end product
basically crap, i hope he surprises me and is one of the finds of the season but rafa please get me schweinsteiger
0500Silva - August 27th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Yea Alonso definately shit player as well…..
TorresRokz123 - August 27th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Riera might be a good add to da squad but oh god im F****** happy that Everton didnt stand a chance against Liverpool of bidding for the Spaniard. GO GO LIVERPOOL!!!

xaero- riera is actually a left winger
pre - August 27th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
i no longer have any faith in rafa . i use 2 stand by him al da tym and defend him. but he is just missing the obviouse. riera is ok not good. Babel is a better option . y waste our money on him wen v need only one more signin ……………… QUARESMA … Get dat in ur head rafa!!!!!
Donavan Ried - August 27th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
So Rafa signed a left winger.Great…..He signed who!!!…..Albert Riera. No Comment……….kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 10:10 am: I ask myself and all of you out there the same question. why not schweinsteige?
...5 Times - August 27th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
First off Quaresma is not THAT good. He has a box of tricks but is inconsistand and has his head up his arse. I would not complain if we had/did sign him but I do not think he would fit Liverpools mould. Riera may be a flop but give him a chance! “Scott B” you made me laf for the first time today! Keep The Faith! Look on the bright side…Everton wanted him so atleast we stopped them from adding to there MASSIVE transfer list this summer..lol
Dario Cacopardo - August 27th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
I think Rafa made a good purchase!
Anonymous - August 27th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
First up, Injurys aside Alonso has been poor the last couple of seasons and I too wanted him shiped out this summer, However from pre season to now hes looked one of the most inform players for liverpool and seems to have a renewed determination about him. Yes he went missing again against middlesborough but in general hes looking more like the Alonso of old. Secondly why is it for every decent signing we make we’ll sign a couple of obviously shite ones. We should pull out of signing riera and sign Angel di Maria, he’s a young quality left sided winger who hasnt even reached his full potential yet!
gaurav - August 27th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
yes .get quaresma ,rafinia and play 4-4-2 consistently ..n see we will win atleast one tittle …and plz keep alonso ..hes class act ..big match player
kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
donovan he d cost about 15 million ie less than barry and he is 23
kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
RAFA LISTEN UP WE WANT SCHWEINSTEIGER
kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
alonso is unsettled thts the reason he is playing crap at the moment
i think something happened last season when he stayed for the birth of his kid rather than play in the champoions league , he lost rafa s loyalty then , that s why he is going
kermit - August 27th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
mark my words if alonso goes to arsenal he will be shit hot again, so sell him foreign
so ——–re4ina———
arbeloa carra agger/skrtel dossena/aurelios
mascherano( i love this guy) lucas / maybe barry
schweinsteiger gerarrd podolski

Anonymous - August 27th, 2008 at 3:15 pm: “why is it for every decent signing we make we’ll sign a couple of obviously shite ones” …….Maybe it’s that Rafa don’t know Rice Krispies from Rat Shit. Joking a side, I think that Rafa is not as good a manager as most of you believe. Someone out there seem to think that Rafa was among the top five managers in the world. Arsene Wenger and Fergie never make as many cock ups as Rafa when signing players
JP - August 27th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
WHY HAVE WE SIGNED THIS MUPHIT WHO COULDN CUT IT AT MAN CITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 9.5 MILL WASTED FUCKIN WASTED. AINT WIN PREMIER LEAGUE TITLES TITLES WITH ALBERT RIERA. WE STRUGGLED TO BRUSH ASIDE AN AVERAGE SIDE FROM BELGIUM TONIGHT FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!! 4 DAYS TO GO IN THE TRANSFER WINDOW, CHRIST SIGN SOMEBODY IN THE CLASS OF SWINSTIGER FOR THE RIGHT N MAKE A REAL STATEMENT, NOT A FUCKIN EX MAN CITY REJECT. SORRY WOT WE PLANNIN ON GOING FOR THIS SEASON UEFA CUP IS IT????
vinnieb5 - August 27th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Watched Riera for a season at City got a bit of skill & flair but major problem was his lack of pace and reluctance to track back
elninoT9 - August 28th, 2008 at 12:01 am
rafa wil be forced to play without gerrard against villa.
my formaton wud be
——–reina——–
—skrtel–carra—
arbeloa—dossenna
—-masch-alonso—-
elzhar–keane–babel
———-torres———-
im jus sick of seein benayoun an kuyt bein dispossed to easily wen they try to beat the defenders. elzhar deserves a place in the startin 11 becos of the impact he has made in recent games babel is the only decent left winger but maybe reira can giv him sum competition.i dont think we really need a right wwinger, babel can play on th right an i think pennant cud put together a gd run of games if given the chance. apparently he said he wants to stay at liverpool and prove his worth, if we wasted 2 an a 1/2 years on kewell surely we can afford to giv pennant a chance, after all he did look promising in the champions league 2 seasons ago, last year he had injuries , jus play him an see wat he can do, at least he is an out an out winger unlike kuyt.
elninoT9 - August 28th, 2008 at 12:10 am
sum one was saying we need a new manager badly… i dont totally disagree with u .. i think benitez may hav got his tactics rong this season, hes been playing without width in the team an that is sumthing u cannot afford to do at the highest level, if u watch the other big teams lyk man united, chesea, arsenal even teams lyk milan, they all hav strong players in wide positions.
another thing i noticed is centre midfielders altho we hav quite a few non are really attackin midfielders, sum may say lucas but he still isn strong or gd enof to fill the void while gerrard is having his operationif the players dont start to find form the luck wil eventually run out an gerrard, carragher an torres cant win evry game single handedly.
Rafa - August 28th, 2008 at 4:21 am
I’m a mupret
shanks - August 28th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
calvo agree totally with what you were saying, rafa definatley has had the money and has proved inconsistant in transfer dealings. Babel though young and has plenty of potential is inconsistant kuyt very hard working and enthusiastic masch awesome but gotta ask would any of the current team apart from torres gerrard and carra get into any of the top two? Rafa has to find someone with something different in his game to make us real challengers. Not someone like Riera who even if he has a good season isn’t someone who will win games when we run out of ideas. He hasn’t got the vision of a deco, or i hate to say it ronaldo and even though they are struggling a bit arsenal have fab fabregas, possibly one of the best midfielders in epl. We need some new ideas.
