Manchester United captain hails star midfielder – and he’s not talking about Cristiano Ronaldo!

The Red Devils jet off to Monaco having landed four Premier League points from their opening two matches. A point at home to Newcastle was not what the doctor ordered, although a fine 1-0 win at Portsmouth has left them in decent shape ahead of the ill-timed international break. And according to Rio Ferdinand, United’s star performer has not been Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez or even Paul Scholes.

Setanta report that the defender has instead heaped praise on Darren Fletcher, the scorer of both of the champions’ goals to date. The Scot scored the only goal of the game at Fratton Park on Monday night and Rio believes that the midfielder will continue to command a first-team place if he continues with his impressive displays.

“Darren was outstanding in pre-season and has carried that form on,” he said.

“It is great that players are posing problems now for the manager when everyone is fit.

“They are putting in performances that demand they are on the bench, if not starting. I am sure the manager will be happy about that.”

Should Fletcher continue to feature regularly for the Red Devils, even when they have a full compliment of players from which to choose? Do United fans think he’s been particularly outstanding so far, despite an inability to pick up Obafemi Martins from corners?!
