Will Michael Owen be the next to leave Newcastle?
by stresster on August 29th, 2008It’s clear that Mike Ashley has tightened the purse strings at St James’ Park, and the consequences could be bad as far as the team is concerned. Many fans will have been disappointed to see Newcastle lose James Milner, even if they did get £10 million from Aston Villa for him, and the words of their manager won’t fill them with confidence either.
Sky Sports report that Kevin Keegan is realistic enough to know that any player could leave the club in the near future, even if he desperately wants to hang on to them. It’s been an annoying few days for the Magpies gaffer, who has been trying to bolster his squad but has instead seen Milner leave the club, despite heaping him with praise after his performance on Tuesday night. With Michael Owen still no closer to signing a new contract, there must be real concern that the England striker could also be heading for the exit door.
“I don’t think any player is untouchable, that’s the first thing I have got to say.
“That’s not to say in any way, shape or form that we want to see Michael Owen leave this club. I certainly would not support that.
“But look around football and look what’s happening, and I’m afraid a club and a manager not wanting a player to go sometimes is not enough.
“At the moment, I am sat here very relaxed about where we are. Yes, we have got a lot of injuries - that happens in football - but those players will get over the injuries, they will come back into the team and they will perform for the club.”
Newcastle supporters, do you think that Michael Owen owes it to Newcastle to stick around and repay the faith that they showed in him by paying Real Madrid £16 million? Or should the club fork out the full £103,000 a week for his services?

Many Newcastle fans will not have been disappointed with the transfer of James Milner!
If Michael Owen stays, great; if not, we will move on.

We at the toon are not overly worried bout James Milner stayin, he handed in transfer request so he doesnt want to play for us so good luck to him bye bye.
We are not like Man utd who makes players stay if they dont want to.
IN KEEGAN WE TRUST!!!!! He will bring in at least one or two quality players .
And whats with the editors of this and all commentors on SKY sayin Michael Owen is best striker it wouldnt be disaster if he left , us geordies will go on , theres plenty more strikers out there and Owen will stay for this season for def then let keegan work his wonders

If Owen leaves Newcastle it will be a major blow to the club. I would like to see him stay in England however.

I think this season and the transfers and all business related issues has just shown how corrupted and paced this end of football has got. Its not so much about what happens on the pitch anymore> i am a man u fan long term. Its great berba came but i also believe that there was elements of wrong in it. What is the poing of a contract anymore ? if it does not protect the player and most important the club. Clubs pay millions for players only to know that they could loose that investement cause thats all they are at the end of the day , buy to sell for more. I guess the money in the game and the valuations are just as bad as properties and real estate. Go back 20 ears and tell someone 200k would not get a you an average house in london in2008. ask the same question that players will transfer for 50 million and wages will be 120k a week we would not believe it. Somewhere somehow everything changed and it will only get worse. What is funny is man united moaned about real tapping in on ronaldo , but isnt that what we did to berba and spurs. Doesnt seem bad when we are doing the wrong thing. I guess berba was around 40 million with the hush money. Spurs had a case there but it was all pushed to the last mins and probably£$£$£ was an easier option. after all they can move on with a nother good striker there should be a good season this year im happy every club is strong and up for the challenge but i think man u will take it all possible, i dont think one player can change things but with ronaldo out he really does open up games ( but not always) with or without him its possible, now with berba its just more strength. Man city, well its one good player but you need a handful more, at large transfer costs and over budget wages that you will neve earn back in footbal withing your first year. But i guess long as the silverwear comes in and puts your club and town on the map thats what counts.
Berba you stumbled to the wrong club from the airport with permisson only for man city,
robinho is a good player, but i think it will take time. Not shev ( chelsea ) time but but not faster than torres either. halfway through season maybe.
he will get 12 goals as a winger
giggs my dearest and loyalist football player ever, hope he stays for a nother year after and just play occasional games, until he takes his coaching career further
Owen. This is a messy situation at newcastle , one that is not needed so soon in the seaon. Unfortunatly its the off the pitch and business side that does it , What is wise doing there, his smile , seems like he has plans up his sleeve. Loosing owen could be good and bad for player and club. if he went i dont think the fans will blame him and share the same emotion as kevin knowing there is weight behind the problems . Its sad to see kev have to leave that is the last straw really and only he can make that choice and know when its time.
Why do the business guys choose to buy and sell players , what is the managers job now, get harrased when you loose and get a pat on the back when you win thats it. This is where it has all gone. Manager relationships and personal preferance is and always has been a feature that the managers bring to the club, they have there scouts who they trust to shortlist players. 70% of club chairmans, and board have no real interest in football so why are they choosing players.,just because they have big names or scored goalslast season. there is much more attributes involved when looking at players and only managers can really see these and how it will work with there systems.
i think the ultimate job is have a billion buy the club own it all, make the choices and also manage.
i say the pen pushers , chill and let the real people do the jobs and take your fat cuts at the end of the season. Now if you are loosing then there is something wrong, selling your best players wont help. shifting managers is a no go and impulse buying wont get you out of trouble, its a structure and mental issues that cause loosing.
we had and still hang on to the best league in the world but this can easily be lost

Owen is a great player, but his 2 years at Real stuffed him up. He’s past his best probably, but he could still come back. Saying that he did score Newcastle’s only goal on Saturday against West Ham. It would be bad for the club if he left, seing as he’s the best striker we have, but Newcastle’ll move on and get some new people in. If he leaves, I reckon he’ll go back to Liverpool- they gave him his start and he played for them the longest and best…but I hope he resigns with Newcastle!
sophie1newcastle - September 23rd, 2008 at 3:12 am
scratch that, i meant re-signs, as in signs up again, didn’t see that until I read it!
