How can Rafa make Liverpool play like title contenders - in SIX WORDS!
by Mr Comfort on August 31st, 2008Long-winded people are boring, and writing full sentences is for chumps. So instead you have just SIX words. Sound easy? Good for you.
After a thoroughly uninspiring display at Villa Park, many Liverpool fans must be wondering what Rafa Benitez needs in order to get his side performing to their potential. Do they need a fully fit Gerrard? Do they need some more new signings? Should they change their tactics on the pitch?
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
You could probably write an essay about this. Well tough, you only have SIX WORDS! Concise and creative, or just plain hilarious, it’s up to you now so leave your masterpiece in the comments.

Play Players In Their Proper Positions
Irish Scouser - August 31st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
So, who was played out of position then (I hope you don’t mean Keane)? And who should he have played instead of Lucas?
We weren’t phenomenal, but it was a tough match and we were without Gerrard and Torres! And did anyone notice that we are joined top of the table? Chelsea and United have already dropped points at home - away to Villa will be tough for everyone. Mascherano is probably the most important player when it comes to the team playing well and he came back with a bang. Dossena was great too.
My six words: (we will play like title contenders) WHEN WE HAVE A FULL TEAM.

to sum it up in 6 words for Rafa “I have no cahones (i have no balls)” Benitez, this is the ethos he and they need to take up
LIVERPOOL - PLAY TO WIN , NOT DRAW!!!!
His formation fot me today told me evrything I have been saying about him for over a season and a half now.
Man .U , The Arse, Chelski, And Soon Spurs will play to win whereas The Scouse play not to be defeated. totally different mental attitude.
Benitez -”a draw is a point gained”
Wenger , Ferguson, Scolari - “a draw is 2 points lost”

If any of you who say Rafa should quit claim to be Liverpool fans, own up now! That is scumbag Manc and Chelsea talk. Seriously, own up and defend your comment.
Liverpool’s best 11 have not played together yet and we’re top of the league and safely qualified in the CL.
For all of you crying for width and blaming Rafa, didn’t you know that Dossena is a wing back and the reason Rafa wanted Gareth Barry so badly is so he could cover at left back Dossena and give him licence to bomb up the wing (plus Alonso being quite poor). Parry, Hicks and Gillett prevented this.

3 words. Gerrard, Positions, Yanks.
but in six, to mr George and mr Gilett, “back the manager or fire him”
1st Word–GERRARD is an inconsistant footballer, benitez sees this which is one of the many, many reasons he was trying to sign gareth barry. This is liverpools predicament. We need consistancy but Gerrard, (who will be, and should be played consistanty game in and game out when he is fit) seems to struggle with form throughout the season. On his day he will be among the top three best midfielders in the world, and will desimate even the best sides. Xabi Alonso has compounded this problem as he has proved himself inconsitant over the last 18 months. This is too long for a top club which deserves top players, I don’t care what you say about his passing ability. If any player no matter how good doesn’t perform at liverpool for 18 months he should be sold to the highest bidder. Every true liverpool fan out there would trade two champions league cups for the premiership title again and for the consistancy that came in the eighties. Barry=MR CONSISTANT and Benitez=CLEVER MANAGER
2nd word-POSITONS. THere have been some questions raised further up this stupid forum (I Don’t know why I write on CAUGHT OFFSIDE) about players being played out of positions. I think to a large degree this problem would be resolved if RAFA had the backing that Fergie has to buy who he wants when he wants. I think that you would see a different liverpool in a few positions if Rafa had absolute backing buy the owners. Rafa has been juggling stuff around because he cannot buy out and out world class players in certain positions all at once he is buying versatile players until he can afford the world class 1st eleven players like torres, babel etc. The biggest lack that I see is quality out wide. there is a huge need for out and out wingers but not just any like gonzales, leto, even to some degree penant but world class wingers like David Bently. I would like to see Babel played in a 4-3-3 as if we don’t have the wingers why not?? or in 4-2-3-1 as one of the three. He is not a natural winger but what a weapon he can be and I believe will become. To me there will always be questions with some of the places benitez plays people but I would so much like to know who he would play and where if he had the players he really wanted. 4-2-3-1 with gareth Barry in the two with Masch plus possibly better full backs would be a title contesting team.
3rd Word-YANKS this one is a little bit tricky as it is hard to know a lot of what goes on behind the scenes. For me the job of the owner of the club is to back the manager or fire him. This middle ground meddling is absolutely ludicrous. Some ignorant fans out there are saying rubbish about how silva WOULD BE A BETTER BUY THAN BARRY and shite like this, and the owners as well as the board have started to withdraw their support for Rafa Benitez’s clear transfer favourite, this shouldn’t happen, not with Rafa Benitez’s pedigree of clever signings (given his financial limits). The other reason why the YANKS stand in the way of Liverpool success is the whole stadium fiasco. They are failing to deliver on their promises and this has been evident time and time again. The stadium is absolutely core to the success of the club as it will not only bring in valuable income but will definately help increase the going forward mentality of everyone involved in the club. and the longer this whole thing drags on the more negative and poor our performances will be. Steve G said himself that it was affecting players last season. Rafa has done a fantastic job at getting on with stuff and making do with the finances he’s got. Reira is yet another example of the second best that Benitez had to content himself with (not that I think he is a bad player-i hope he does well but you know what I mean). Yanks out, someone who actually cares about the history and tradition of the club, and not making money in.

In eleven words:
Torres NGog
Babel Gerrard Penant
Alonso Mascherano
Agger Skrtel Carrager

Me girlfriend who doesn’t even watch football summed it up the problems at Liverpool:
Why is it that Liverpool who are a great team buying average quality names. I dont understand why you are not buying the best?
I thought Liverpool were one of the best teams in the world?
Why is it that you loose two players and you don’t have the quality to plug the gaps?
Your team is average compared to Chelsea and Manu who seem to have loads’ good players.
The words of a woman giving my team this kind analysis hit me like a bolt.
Lets get out of dreamland for a moment. Rafa has done ok this season by default.
The balance of the team is wrong and it proved yesterday that we are still a 3rd or 4th place team. We don’t have the quality in the 2nd and 3rd starter of players to make an impact on the league later on. We should not be looking to draw against teams like Villa we need to beat these teams and also start getting superior results against the top 3.
I am very worried as the position we are in is a smoke screen we are playing very poorly and unless the remaining 9 start performing I see us flying back down the table once we start to play better quality teams

“If any of you who say Rafa should quit claim to be Liverpool fans, own up now!”
I AM A LIVERPOOL FAN…..and yes Rafa should quit or be sacked, and anyone of you who can’t see this know that I have many bottles of Snake Oil for sale only £9.99 a pop.
I will use the money form the sale to buy Liverpool Fc, pay all the clubs debts, build a 100,000 capacity Stanley Park stadium with free beer pumps, and lap dancers for all our fans and give the new manager £500m war chest so he can buy or clone all the best players in the world, Pele, Madonna, Kaka, Van Bastan, another Gerrard or two
Yes I live in fantasy land but so does and anyone else who can’t see by now that with approaching £200m Rafa had to spend on players we should be fighting out the top 3 spot with Chelsea and Man Utd ever year ( With 6 points or less between us), Instead of trying to cling on to fourth place ever year.
Can you imagine if David Moyes and Everton had that sought of money???
I am not one of those people who you will hear say things like ” Let’s not talk about what’s wrong with England Lets talk about what’s right with England” …what’s right with something speaks for it’s self…
And there is something very wrong at Liverpool Fc.
We have an above Average squad with some great players,. We need to improve in some positions. What we don’t have is an above average manager.
We have a manager who is a bad tactician, a manager who plays players out of position, and a manger with little or no ambition. What Manager buys an injury prone player(Degen) when there are better out there without the problems Degen carries??
We need only run into financial difficulties,(We might be there already) lose a few key players to injury,(Gerrard,Torres etc) and have a bad string of results and we could find our self becoming the next Leeds Utd
I always get excited at the start of the season, with all the transfer talks and all.
For the first time ever it was not the case this season, and it saddens me.
Let’s hope that Rafa will be the one walking alone at the end of this season

toxteth man - September 1st, 2008 at 6:24 am……2nd word-POSITONS “.Rafa has been juggling stuff around because he cannot buy out and out world class”
Can’t understand that comment and don’t agree with it… Three reason why:
(1) He has had the money over 4 years appox’ £200m to buy players, but with few exceptions has time and time spent it on squad players
(2) Has a right winger in Babel and a attacker in Kuyt. Only needed a left winger but wasted £20 on Keane instead. But instead choose to play these players out of postion. you saw what happend when Kuyt was switch back to a strikers role. within seconds a chance at goal (offside only just) a winning goal shortly after.
(3) Rafa buying four & five players a year in stead of one or two quality players for the same money. £40m plus this year could have brought Drenthe for £20-£25m

toxteth man - September 2nd, 2008 at 5:14 am
donavein reid,
you raise some good questions about some of Rafa’s signings. There will not be a manager in the world who doesn’t have his signings questioned. Some managers buy the “best” players in the world only to find that they turn out to be a failure at a new club-Morientes, Shevchenko, and tons of others. I do sometimes wish that Rafa would do what seems obvious, eg. Buy some quality wingers! But you have to also give him credit for trying to sign Gareth Barry. As far as I can see there couldn’t be a better buy for Liverpool at this point in time than him. All I am saying is that the problem at LFC goes deeper than Rafa. Fergie took I think seven years before he won the EPL, so give Rafa more time, and more backing, then judge him.
