Mark Hughes has told Sky Sports News that Spurs have accepted Manchester City’s shock bid for Dimitar Berbatov.
The Bulgaria international has been a target for Premier League champions Manchester United throughout the summer, but City have now stepped in with an audacious last-minute move.
City’s offer for Berbatov is reported to be in excess of £30million and would set a new British transfer record. (Sky Sports)
Manchester City set to sign Dimitar Berbatov on dramatic transfer deadline day.
With just hours left before the transfer window closes, Manchester City have launched a bid in excess of £30million to hijack Dimitar Berbatov’s expected move to local rivals United on the day the club is taken over by an Abu Dhabi investment group. (Telegraph)
Berbatov is set to be re-united at club level with his Bulgaria international team-mate Martin Petrov, now that wages of £150,000 per week have been agreed. (fansfc.com)
Well it’s the news we were all waiting for but let’s face it many believed the move to be to the red half of Manchester and it’s a huge shock that Mark Hughes has managed to snare the talented Bulgarian for a fee believed to be in the region of £33m! Now Spurs can look forward to splashing the cash from the sales before the deadline hits at midnight! What do the fans think of this move? Man City supporters must be excited and Tottenham fans will be understandably relieved to finally end the speculation!

Well i am glad that’s over and done with, most sources say its done and dusted and now we can use the money for someone else, maybe Milito?
Greg - September 1st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I can’t believe we got him! It appears that way anyway, the teams have agreed the fee and Berbs seems to have said yes to the contract! Just when i thought we were beginning to lose it again. We get SWP and Berbatov in the space of five days, incredible!
Nigel - September 1st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Whilst i am always the first to say “wait until we see him at a press conference or in the club strip” before getting carried away, i have heard from a very reliable Spurs source that Berbs has indeed accepted the huge wage deal from City and he is on his bike, good riddance!

why not sell him to madrid for 36m? was it?
or swap him for hiugian and gago
they prob want him to replace robinho
Red Mist - September 1st, 2008 at 4:49 pm
Hmmm not sure. I am reading that he is at Carrington, talking to the mighty reds as we speak ha ha ha we will see….
Stratty - September 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Well, perhaps it would be safer if he went to United than to another Top4 challenger…
Paul Yid - September 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Rehashed story – lets see the contract & which shirt he’s holding up in the morning. But be great if it comes to pass one over Utd & Burbs
Red Mist - September 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
I think that spurs must have fully accepted an offer from United before today, otherwise they would not have allowed him to meet with SAF. Sky Sports are saying that Madrid are offering £45M euros for him now. ha ha ha. The world has gone mad. Nobody knows what is being talked about or agreed or what will happen at the end of today apart from Berbatov and the guys in suits, but here’s a wild prediction…..BERBATOV WILL NOT SIGN FOR CITEH. They are just the most depressing shower of muppets in the modern game and you all know it. I know money talks, but not THAT loud….citeh….ewwwww!
Anonymous - September 1st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Isn’t he over at united right now discussing terms?
Just because a bid is accepted doesn’t mean he’s going to City unfortunately. It looks like berba has the pick of 3 clubs today. I just hope it’s not united he ends up at
Spurs est 1882* - September 1st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
If this is true it proves Berba to be a liar. He wanted to leave to compete in the Champions League, not in hopes of competing. He COULD get champs league with us. City are our rivals, United are not. Man U may as well be in a different league.
I hope Real do come up with a bid, but in Sky Sports they are saying Berba has not even gone to City yet, but United are talking to Berbatov (even though a bid has not been accepted). If he goes to city I hope both his legs get broke. I have never wished it on a player.
As I said, come on REAL MADRID!!!
Red Mist - September 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Stratty – why united in preference to another top4 challenger….not sure i understand…you saying united won’t be top 4??
billiospur - September 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Real madrid?..as well ….poor Sir Alex ..36 mill please or…..tap off!

Laurence Bristol - September 1st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Apparently , after having spoken to a bulgarian interpretor , Berbatov actually said ” I want to go to Manchester City as they are in the UEFA cup and i can get £150k a week … it is my Dream !” What an arse … Good riddance to bad rubbish !!
Spurs est 1882* - September 1st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Man u are not Top 4 Challengers, they ARE top 4. Each season I think there are only 2 dead certs for top 4 and that is Chelski and United.

Remixed story. Where from the 130K a week info? Your headline doesn’t match your article. Nowhere in the article does it mention 130k a week person terms.
You are just getting ahead of yourself with this gamble so you can claim credit for the story from Skysports.

Berbatov is magic? He wears a magic hat?And when he saw the agent’s fee?He said I’m having that
Paul - September 1st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
We mus’nt sell to United, they have only offered us £20mill plus Frazier Campbell, who is a promising youngster which is what our squad is already full of, what we need is players that can perform now. Plus if it was’nt for United unsettling Berbatov in the first place, he probably would never have wanted to leave Spurs. Old red nose must be fuming, he must have thought the ball was in his court thinking that United were the only club interested and that we needed to sell, he could now end up with nobody, ha ha ha!
troy the yid - September 1st, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Well done for City if they do get him. I hope Berb scores a hat trick against man u to rub it in as well. Berb is a big sulk but on his day he is a great talent to watch, so all the best to city this coming season. Oh and thanks for the wad of cash to help finish our team building off:)

It is true that I have signed for Manchester City for only £150,000 a week.
I not so sulky now, and will score against the United Manchester when I get the chance.

Ajibose - September 1st, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Waoh! This is the most intriguing transfer saga of the season, i can’t believe that Berbatov supposedly having a medical at Carrington Road has just signed for Manchester City. I am so happy he didn’t join United.
Borat - September 1st, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I just hope he goes full stop and Spurs can get on with things though I wish any deal had been done ages ago. As for City, I would just love it if he does, then gets a hat trick against ManUre and moons Old Red Nose as a celebration.
David - September 1st, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Dimitar Berbatov will sign for Manchester United by 10pm he has held talks with Ferguson and is on his way to hold talks with Mark Hughes.
Stratty - September 1st, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Yes, Red mist see Spurs est 1882 for clarification of the top4 challenger issue.
If Berbatov’s been offered 150,000 then its probably three times as much as he’d get at United. Enough to make any man re-assess his values, including the Champions League, which he might gamble that he’ll be in next year.
I’m more concerned with the fact that it’s all quiet on the western front regarding bringing people into Spurs, and we still need another striker and defensive midfielder.
Stratty - September 1st, 2008 at 6:08 pm
David, if he’s going to sign for the reds at 10pm, why has he gone to chat to mark hughes?…

So-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o. This headline is utter horsesh1t. Ha ha ha ha. Do you think that Fergie will handcuff Berbster to the furniture at OT till after midnight? YOU BET!! HA HA HA HA!!! …Do you think that spurs must have already accepted a bid from United before Berbster set off for Manchester but didn’t tell the Spurs fans?? YOU F*****G BET!! LOL. Never mind guys…I’ve just read on sky sports a bit ago that you’re in talks with ……(drum roll) EMILE HESKEY!! Deh-de-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-eh!!!! ROFL!!! HA HA HA HA!!! anyway, thanks guys. They will be ironing the letters on the back of his new red jersey as we speak….and when our two teams meet, it will be The Berbster, in his new red jersey, thumping a hatfull of matchballs into the spurs onion bag……GOAL!!! GOAL!!! GOAL!!! GOAL!!! GOAL!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!
Gary - September 1st, 2008 at 7:21 pm
That would make my day. United have tapped him up for City. We get a realistic price for a player United weren’t (and still aren’t) allowed to speak to. United get docked points for illegal tapping and it’s the best outcome after Liverpool and Man U have joined forces to disrupt our start to the season. Not satisfied with playing South American ringers, now they’re into illegal tapping. I hope he goes to City and United get docked points for their arrogance and scandalous rule breaking.
Louis Haha - September 1st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Dream on sucker. My money is on us having agreed a deal but Levy just didn’t tell you. Ha ha. Scandalous rule breaking….do me a favour. We can’t sign him without permission, dumbass!! so…….let’s see who hosts a press conference after the dust has settled, but don’t get your hopes up Gary
Bristol Spurs - September 1st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
ManU have disrupted the player for a year, arsed about all summer and having completely unsettled him arsed Berbs about to try and get him on the cheap. He is worth a British record, he guarantees goals. I’m not an ABU, but I hope Utd have a striker crises and look on in envy regretting their silly arrogant transfer behaviour.
Hear that sound Mr Ferguson?
It’ the chickens coming home to roost on your red nose.
The BIG rich club IN Manchester, without massive debt, with Mancunian fans are having a party and good luck to them.
Only sore point; making Thaskin ‘honourary’ president for life? LIFE is what he should get for all the human rights abuses and robbing hos country blind. There would be more honour in having Liam Gallagher or Ricky Hatton as president. Why not go the whole hog and have Gary Glitter on the board.

I guess y’all should wait till 2moro morning & see which shirt berba dons rather than reading craps all about. SAF might be “sluggish” in making decisive moves but sure does know how to make last minutes swoops.
Dave - September 1st, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Dont Know but it seems that Sir Alex missed the boat here……Berbs is off to city and my question is spurs lost two very good strikers in keane and berbatov…lots of players came in and looks as if they are rebuilding a team again…those this give them a boost or will it end them up with the usual half of the table position and maybe a cup run….Spurs spent money over the last 10 years but the last time they won the leauge was in 61…quite a long time for a club that is said to be a big club…and the money they spend on players…
Louis Haha - September 1st, 2008 at 9:54 pm

From http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/articles/manchesteruniteddeal020909.html
The Club can announce that it has reached agreement with Manchester United for the permanent transfer of Dimitar Berbatov for a fee of £30.75m. As part of the settlement the Club has agreed not to pursue its official complaint to the Premier League.
The deal sees Fraizer Campbell coming the other way on a season long loan. Campbell, 20, spent last season on loan at Hull City where his goals played a pivotal role in the Tiger’s promotion to the Premier League.

Don't count your chickens - September 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 pm
I don’t think at any point Berbatov wanted to go anywhere other than United. If there were any doubts surely him turning up at Carrington Training ground was a big enough clue. As for city breaking into the top four this season, FAT CHANCE. Though who knows next season with the money they have now. United for Prem and Euro Double again. Berbatov, Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney up front, not to mention Giggsy, Nani, Anderson and Park. United look too good now. No change at all at the top with the big four taking up the same positions as last season.
S4E - September 2nd, 2008 at 2:33 pm
YOU CAN KEEP BERBA ,YOU WATCH HIM IF HE DON’T GET THE PASSESW HE WANTS ,HE WILL SULK LIKE A LITTLE BABY,WITH THAT MONEY WE GOT WE CAN BUY A COUPLE OF CLASSY PLAYERS.
Don't count your chickens - September 2nd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
S4E. You can buy a couple of players. NOT UNTIL JANUARY THOUGH. Berbatov is a sulker thats for sure, So was Cantona! We all know how good he was for united, I am expecting the same level from Berbatov. He will be a massive signing for us.
