Wigan set to sign ‘waste of space’ ex-Birmingham goalkeeper: Will he prove Blues owner wrong?

It’s nearly a year since Steve Bruce left St Andrews for the JJB Stadium, yet the bad blood between the Wigan manager and Birmingham board shows no sign of disappearing. It was an acrimonious split back in November, especially with the ex-Man United defender forced to give his old club some money after a dispute over image rights. He now looks set to sign a former Brum player…

Setanta report that the Latics boss wants another goalkeeper at the club, after allowing Carlo Nash to leave for Everton. While Birmingham co-owner described Richard Kingson as a ‘complete waste of space’ after a number of errors while playing for City, Bruce is keen on recruiting Ghana’s number one.

“Kingson is the No.1 goalkeeper for Ghana and we’re hoping he will join us,” Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post.

“At the moment he’s with Ghana – they’re playing in Libya this weekend, so he should be coming to see us next week.

“He hasn’t got a club at the moment and we’re allowed to bring in out-of-contract players.

“We need three goalkeepers, and make no mistake, if I hadn’t got him lined-up, I wouldn’t have let Nash leave.”

Kingson only made three starts for the Championship team last season, with just one league appearance, where he was at fault for both goals when City lost 2-0 against Portsmouth. After that, Maik Taylor came back into the team and he was one of the bad signings that Bruce had made according to David Sullivan. Can he make a more lasting impression in the eyes of Wigan fans?
