According to this source an agent’s comments could well be inviting another bid from Wenger for this top-notch Liverpool star.
Arsenal have been actively searching for midfield reinforcements since the summer departures of Mathieu Flamini, Gilberto Silva and Alexander Hleb, despite the subsequent arrivals of Samir Nasri and Aaron Ramsey from Marseille and Cardiff respectively.
Spain international Xabi Alonso, however, was mentioned with a switch to north London but a mooted £16million deal failed to transpire. Yet it could happen in four months’ time after the Liverpool player’s representative Inaki Ibanez refused to rule out the possibility of a move.
“January is a long time away,” he said.
“At the moment Xabi is concentrating on playing well for Liverpool. No agreement was reached to sell him, so mentally he is a Liverpool player.
“But we will see what happens in January.” (Telegraph)
Of course Xabi has been linked with a move to the Emirates for a few months now, which is unsurprising given that prior to the season’s start the Spaniard was deemed low down the pecking order for a starting spot. But due to Olympic call-ups and injury he has found himself showing Rafa just how invaluable he can be. Liverpool fans rate the former Real Sociedad man more highly than their boss and I agree with their sentiments as I think that Alonso is a player who should be a first-team starter even when the whole squad is injury-free. If Wenger does secure Alonso in January he would help solve any shortcomings the club has in that department. Do Arsenal fans feel that the Reds midfielder could form a good partnership with his international team-mate Fabregas? And do Liverpool fans hope that Benitez turns down any bid for the 26=year-old?
