Arsenal and Manchester United are to go head to-head in a fight for £16million-rated Portugal star Miguel Veloso in January.
Arsene Wenger has been tracking the Sporting Lisbon midfielder for a year and considered a transfer window deadline-day bid.
The Gunners boss is understood to be ready to step up his interest when the window opens again on New Year’s Day but he faces competition from old rival Sir Alex Ferguson.
Veloso’s representative Paulo Barbosa has revealed United and Arsenal are both scouting the player, who was also a Tottenham target this summer. The versatile Portugal international, 22, can play as a defensive midfielder, centre-half or left-back.
Barbosa said: “Arsenal are looking at Veloso for the future and it’s possible a deal can be done for January. We will also know then what will happen with Manchester United.
“Arsenal and United are both always watching Veloso and making observations. He would cost either club at least 20million euros.” (News of the World)
There are many who believe that Arsene desperately needs a defensive midfielder following the summer departures of both Flamini and Gilberto Silva. However, Denilson has done a wonderful job and I don’t see Wenger needing to spend big to fill that hole. However, if they do, as this source suggests, make such a bid it will be a good addition. Veloso is a quality player who is adaptable and has a decent level of experience for a 22-year-old. Do Gunners fans think that such a bid is necessary?

We need a good midfielder but not one this expensive! Agreed with your piece on Denilson so not sure we need to fork out this much for Veloso

We do need additional depth to the squad and although he is a lot of money he is only 22 and with a fair amount of experience. He is also very versatile and could fill a number of positions that would fit nicely with Arsene’s future plans. If we could get him in the next transfer window it would probably give the squad a real boost to remain at the top and win the league by a comfortable margin and make us fresh for the Champions League final.

SAF’s leading scout is arsene wenger. if saf needs young talent he looks to where wenger is looking. example: christiano ronaldo, ramsey, walcott, and the nigerian player. now this. man u owes wenger money.

Veloso is a quality player. Look back match between England U-21 and Portugal U-21 which been won 2-0 by England. Every passing and through pass was excellent. Go and get buy him with whatever the price is.

As if Mancs need another holding midfielder:
They have Scholes, Hargreaves, and that overrated twat Anderson
But would be a great buy for Arsenal

I think Manu will have to sell before they can buy, they have an abundance of midfielders, and no matter how big Manu are, money is very hard to get at the moment.

i believe it will be a great addition to arsenal fight for tha titles this season bcus denilson will soon weaken out. i believe denilson is not ripe enough to play like 4 or 5 matchs in a row.

Hey! Has everyone forgotten the newest “buying” rich kid on the block - Man City?? What makes us so sure that when Citi finds out anyone the big clubs are looking at, they will 100% come around also like “sharks”.
