Liverpool boss makes CRAZY comparison!
by Mr Comfort on September 17th, 2008Rafa Benitez is a charitable chap but his latest comparison between an Anfield failure and a current club hero barely needs to be made!

With Javier Mascherano rapidly assuming Claude Makelele’s coveted mantle as the best holding midfielder around, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has been swift to praise the Argentine‘s unselfish appetite for work, and to compare him with the ’amazing’ former Reds midfielder Momo Sissoko…
“The work-rate of Javier in the midfield is amazing,” said Benitez.
“He can give the other midfield players more freedom. If you go with more offensive players you know he will be in a good defensive position, and that is very important for the team.”
Benitez then went on to compare Mascherano favourably to former Liverpool midfielder Sissoko, now at Juventus.
“The only player who covered more ground than Mascherano was Momo Sissoko. The difference is Javier has more experience. Momo was amazing and Mascherano is as good as Momo in terms of the work-rate but also has better positions.” (goal.com)
Javier is a fantastic player - a midfielder with bite and tenacity who has one hell of an engine. Momo? Well, he was pretty average in comparison. When the club managed to get a tad over 8m for the Malian international I was surprised as I am sure Benitez himself was. Mascherano is a player in a different league to Sissoko who, to be fair, has become a more complete player at Juventus. Do Liverpool fans think that their Argentine man is head and shoulders above their former player or am I being unkind to the former Auxerre man?

I think you missed the point. Benitez was not comparing Sissoko’s technical abilities to those of mascherano. Obviously mascherano can control and pass the ball far better. But Sissoko was really good at covering ground and protecting the defenders. His tackling and work rate was amazing. It’s just that he had no clue what to do with the ball, and that made him look bad!

idiot.
he compared the amount of running they do. Not the ability.
If he thought momo was that good he wouldnt have sold him for half of what mash cost.
He will have stats on the workrate as this is monitored.. so whats wrong with his “crazy” comment.
I am as good as Stevie.. at drinking water… CRAZY must mean I meant I am as good a player really

There is nothing crazy about Benitez’s comparison to Momo Sissoko! It is well documented that Sissoko constantly ran more yards than any other player for Liverpool and probably in the Premiership too! He was an immense player till he got that eye injury against Benfica. One great game in particular stood out - the 2-1 defeat of Barcalona at the Nou Camp. Sissoko almost single-handedly snuffed out the threat of Xavi, Iniesta, Messi and Ronaldinho in that game. So for Benitez to compare Mascherano with Sissoko is a massive compliment. Although Sissoko’s ball control at times was erratic he was a fantastic ball winner just like the “monster masch” is now for Liverpool.

Mr Comfort. You are possibly the biggest twat on the intermet. Momo worked amazingly hard for liverpool. Thats the comparison. Benitez hen goes on to say that MAsch is the better tackler and player, but its no secret that momo put his heart and soul into that red kit. And it shows when we made a huge turn around on him. We baught him for about 8mil and sold him for 16 to one of the biggest clubs in italy.
Muppet!

sissoko was great before he got that injury but after that he was shocking and it was painful to watch him. Mash is miles better, but did i miss something?was he actually comparing the two players?

Mascherano = great player and player you would hate to play against but god he is a tosser, you have to admit. His theatrics and diving is a blight on the sport

he was comparing workrate ya moose!! momo was everywhere wen he played for us, the man never stopped running so to say mascherano has as good a work rate as momo is a big compliment!! and momo was hardley a flop. he was quality for two seasons when he came with no expectation and injury took there toll on his form eventually and with competition for places he had to go. id rather have momo now than lucas put it that way!!

anonymous? Any reason why you remained anonymous. Obviously a UTD fan. Mascherano might give it a little bit sometimes but he is far from the worst offender in the League. Far from the worst. Why single him out? You bitter bastard. Because he he is better than any of your midfielders perhaps?

mark got it spot on - after Momo’s injury he was dire - he couldn’t time tackles or taking possession of the ball - his game against Marseille at home near the start of last season was the worst - and cost us the game. I was really pleased when Juve came in for him - as for Mr Comfort saying he is a more complete player now - I’d be interested to see if he has recovered his form. They took JAR off us for £4m and he can’t run any more - but he’s old and will not get better. Thanks Juventus.
