Arsenal will have to wait until next summer before they can land Sporting Lisbon’s £16million-rated midfield star Miguel Veloso.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had been eyeing a January move for the 22-year-old, who he has been keeping a close eye on since the summer, but he has now been told to wait.

Manchester United are ready to go head to head with the Gunners but Sporting say that there is little chance of him leaving midway through the season and that both teams will have to wait.

Since the loss of Flamini and, to a lesser extent, former captain Gilberto, many have considered the Gunners to be a little light on experience in the defensive midfield role. Denilson has performed manfully this season but is in many ways as suited to going forward as defending his ground. Veloso won’t come cheap but he is well worth the valuation quoted and you could see why Arsene was toying with the idea of snapping up Brazilian Miniero as a stop-gap.
