Sir Alex is once again linked with this supremely talented Frenchman, but he will have to fight off his newly-minted neighbours Manchester City!
MANCHESTER UNITED and Manchester City have been warned they must splash out a world record £80million for Lyon striker Karim Benzema.
The French striker is one of Europe’s hottest properties — with Real Madrid, Barcelona and the two Milan clubs also on his trail.
Benzema, 20, is under contract until 2013 but has an £80m release clause with the French champions.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said: “Our aim is to win the Champions League with Karim.”
The fee might stretch United but moneybags City’s new Arab owners would not shy away from the deal. (News of the World)
It does seem that United could find it hard to combine the services of Rooney/Berbatov and Tevez and, whilst this is in some ways a good problem to have, it could affect the harmony of their strikeforce if one of them is forced to spend time on the bench.
Benzema is the kind of striker that every club would love to have, but I doubt that either Manchester outfit will fork out the current release clause, but I also doubt that Karim will be at Lyon for very much longer. After all winning the French league every season is one thing, but a chance to triumph in a more formidable league and a real shot at the Champions League will surely turn the youngster’s head sooner rather than later.
Do United fans think that the club should have bought Berbatov and do they think that Sir Alex will opt for a big bid for this French international?
