Will £30m Berbatov become Manchester United’s Shevchenko?
by jakepjohnson on October 1st, 2008Think back a few years. The Premiership champions have just made a £30 million signing of an eastern European striker. He starts slowly. “Things will get better” everyone says. “He just needs one, then he’ll explode” they carry on. He starts to look sad, unhappy. He tries things that used to be successful at his old club. They don’t come off. He looks a lonely man on the field.
Fast forward to the present day and the same thing appears to be happening. In that case, the champions were Chelsea. The £30m man, Andrei Shevchenko. This time round, Manchester United and their £30.25m signing Dimitar Berbatov. As I sit and watch Berbatov wandering the Aalborg pitch like a ghost, making small mistakes here and there, I wonder. Is history repeating itself?
There are factors to consider. That it takes time to adjust, seeing as the Tottenham style of play differs from that of Manchester United. That he only played one pre-season game with Spurs. He has also had to put up with a lot of criticism from White Hart Lane, with ex-Spurs manager Terry Venables calling the striker ‘poisonous’ and blaming their poor start solely on him:
You got your way but your poisonous presence at the start of the season - the brooding and the reluctance to play - has cost the club that believed in you.
Thats a lot for one man who was previously held with such affection in North London to take.
Shevchenko’s time in London had very different factors. He was brought in as the chairman’s friend, with the manager having to shuffle his team about and fit him in. Plus he was bought to solve the striker problem at Stamford Bridge, something which his 9 league goals did nothing to help.
Berbatov’s arrival at Old Trafford, while drawn-out, comes with less pressure. United are not a team in desperate need of some goals. And the Bulgarian was not bought as a supposed jewel in the Glazer’s crown. Yet, despite assisting Carlos Tevez’s goal at Anfield only minutes into his debut, he has looked lethargic, out of place and out of touch. Could Berbatov emulate Shevchenko’s terrible time at the home of the Champions?
Things may change. He just scored twice and he’s nearly smiling…

hes not a bad player.. when he actually plays.
sometimes when i watch him in games hes jus walking around like a headless chicken. he might aswell be having a cup of tea.
the man makes little to no effort but can put the crowd into raptures with a stunning volley or sparkling run. the man has talent, but he also has a bone-idle, sulky attitude problem that can ruin a footballer.
only time will tell, one things for sure if he put his magic moments in games into a full game he would be top quality

The Mighty Arsenal - October 1st, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Making ’small mistakes’ like scoring two goals, his sublime part in the first goal and playing an unbelievable ball with the outside of his foot to put Ronaldo through one-on-one?
I wish we had a player to make these sorts of ’small mistakes’.

stupid article.berba has immense talent and the fact that fergie wanted him and that he was not a friend of our owner wud suggest that fergie knows exactly how to use him.his alround game cannot be questioned.sure he is gonna take time but so did bergkamp,so did cantona so has plenty of players.the sheer simplicity of his game is in itself a joy to watch and similar to the 2 players mentioned and sheringham and that didnt stop the likes of arsenal and utd enjoying some tropy-laden years aswell as entertainment for fans.30 million mistake?that can only be mentioned at the end of the season and by then he´ll have more than proved himself!

is this a serious article?
are you honestly comparing a younger, skillfull, target man striker, with 2 years premiership experience and over 40 premiership goals with Shevchenko?
are you an actual football fan or are you doing a bizarre research project for a university course and reading football facts and figures and trying to make a universal comparison equation for footballers?

If you notice, I did make this point =)

I was referring to the mistakes like missing losing the ball, mkaing poor passing choices and scuffing shots, as he suffered against Liverpool and, until he scored his first goal, Aalborg.

Sing to the tune of ‘the animals came in two by two, hoorah, hoorah’
They said they’d never sell to us again, again,
They said they’d go the FA and complain, complain,
But when he left the lane and said fuck Ramos, there was only place for Berbatov,
DIMI-TAR BERBATOV, United new number 9!!
They say he sulks a lot and won’t play for the team, the team,
But Rooney, Tevez, Berba what a dream, a dream!!
Hes got two great feet, hes tall and strong, the City fans wish they could sing a long, its DIMI-TAR BERBATOV is he the new Cantona??!!
(please note the song asks IS he the new Cantona.)
Enjoy.
