Michael Owen’s days at Newcastle look numbered after he put his contract renewal talks on hold until the end of the season.
The uncertainty at St James’ Park has driven the 28-year-old England striker to defer on a decision on the reported £105,000-a-week offer made to him.
Owen will now be free to talk to interested clubs in January and this is certain to alert a host of Premier League clubs.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley claims to have made the wages offer to Owen, yet it actually equates to a pay cut but with added bonuses such as appearances, goals and trophies won.
Owen, who signed for Toon in 2005, has a good goalscoring record at the club although he has suffered with injuries.
He has netted 21 times in 48 starts and was on course to become England’s all-time scorer until his fitness problems in recent years. He has 40 international goals, nine behind Bobby Charlton.
But reports in the Mirror suggest Owen is ready to call time on the Geordies and will weigh up his options once Ashley completes his sale of the club. (Daily Mail)

Michael Owen is one of the few who have performed well this season for the St James’ Park outfit, having managed five goals in five starts. Liverpool could well do with another striking option, even though Robbie Keane has now broken his duck. Also the former hero would be very cheap given his contract is coming to an end, so either Rafa could hold on until the end of the season and pick him up for free, or get him in January for around £4-£6m.

Even though Benitez has steered his side to an unbeaten start this season, the club have managed only seven goals in six Premier League games, so the added bonus of a lethal finisher like Owen would surely be a worthy addition? Do Liverpool fans think that Rafa should make the move for their former favourite?
