Michael Owen has put his contract negotiations with crisis-hit Newcastle on hold until the end of the season.
The England striker will now be free to talk to other clubs in January and leave for nothing at the end of the season.
Owner Mike Ashley claimed to have offered Owen a pay rise on his £105,000-a-week wages to commit to United at the end of August.
The deal was a basic wage cut, but with lucrative bonuses for appearances, goals and club achievements.
However, Owen will assess his options once Ashley has sold up. The present regime also tried to transfer him on deadline day, offering him to Spurs and Everton.

Michael Owen still has a few more good years in him. After a slump and repeated injuries during his early days at St James’ Park, it appears the former Liverpool man is getting back to near his best and he may well be interested in a move to London. It’s true that Tottenham are not in a good place right now, but compared to the woes at Newcastle, things at White Hart Lane look rosy!

Ramos will surely sort things out sooner rather than later, but a move for a clinical striker like Owen could well be the kind of signing to help the club make its way back up the table. Do Spurs fans think it would be worth making another move for the 28-year-old England international?
