Now Bolton could sue West Ham over Tevez affair: Where will it all end?
by stresster on October 3rd, 2008Carlos Tevez has found himself in the newspapers a lot over the past fortnight, despite not doing much of note for Manchester United. The Argentine is probably bemused to see his name mentioned with such regularity, with the FA finding West Ham guilty of illegally fielding him during the season of 2006/7, where he helped the Hammers to stay in the Premier League.
While Sheffield United (who would have stayed up if the Hammers had gone down) are due to receive around £30 million in compensation, the Daily Mirror report that Bolton Wanderers are looking into a legal case as well. According to chairman Phil Gartside, West Ham’s extra points led them to finish above the Trotters and deprive the Lancashire club of extra prize money. Do they have a leg to stand on?
Gartside said: “There is an argument to say we can claim three points from West Ham.
“We went down there and lost 3-1, Tevez scored two, and it cost us £700,000 because that was one place in the league.
“If Sheffield United are successful and get a claim, then why shouldn’t we?
“It will make two or three clubs look at it and say they have lost income.”
Indeed, with Sheffield United’s players also looking at the possibility of suing West Ham, a can of worms has been opened. The east London club will also defend themselves to the hilt against these charges, although it does seem inevitable that their finances will be shaken by having to fork out £30 million to the Blades. Do Bolton also have a case or should this one be put to bed?

Let them sue. It just emphasises the fact that the majority of the PL clubs and players are motivated by greed and sport is now secondary. It seems odd that having received some flak from the arbitration panel for challenging their findings, the directions hearing to start the difficult process of determining compensation has now been put back. If anything at all is paid, it will not be £30M so dream on Sheff Utd fans. Enjoy life in the championship, you will be there for a long time. You had one chance in the Premier League and Warnock blew it. Personally I have nothing against Sheff Utd fans. Why should I? You are just a small team from Sheffield, with a chairman who is motivated by greed, with a manager that fielded weakened teams but said it was ok and a player that was loaned to Watford and it was announced publicly that he would not be allowed to play against Sheff Utd. And you call West Ham cheats! The audacity and ignorance of your chairman is beyond belief. If we did give you £30M, you still wouldn’t get promoted…….

Good shout Trevor. Sure we were guilty of breaking the rules and were punished with a 5.5 M fine. We did not set the fine we abided by the PL decision and paid up. Now the greed of PL football club chairman is upon us.
Sheffield Utd. Bolton & Wigan have shown what they are all about and maybe Fulham too, although I expect Mr. Fayad to rise above such greed as he has proved a genuine benifactor for Fulham and the calibre of chairman that is needed.
I will never forget Steve Bruce saying he was pleased when W, Han were last relegated because we had stopped Man Utd winning the first premership title by holding them to a draw. Allowing Blackburn to take the title. Great for Tony Gale. Whealen & Bruce deserve each other, bitter old men, all hammers supporters should boycott JMB sports. Gartside is a clown and is only waiting for a sell out payday (the sooner the better).
I hope BG can provide the stability the hammers need. He has made an impressive start.
