Carlos Tevez has found himself in the newspapers a lot over the past fortnight, despite not doing much of note for Manchester United. The Argentine is probably bemused to see his name mentioned with such regularity, with the FA finding West Ham guilty of illegally fielding him during the season of 2006/7, where he helped the Hammers to stay in the Premier League.

While Sheffield United (who would have stayed up if the Hammers had gone down) are due to receive around £30 million in compensation, the Daily Mirror report that Bolton Wanderers are looking into a legal case as well. According to chairman Phil Gartside, West Ham’s extra points led them to finish above the Trotters and deprive the Lancashire club of extra prize money. Do they have a leg to stand on?

Gartside said: “There is an argument to say we can claim three points from West Ham.

“We went down there and lost 3-1, Tevez scored two, and it cost us £700,000 because that was one place in the league.

“If Sheffield United are successful and get a claim, then why shouldn’t we?

“It will make two or three clubs look at it and say they have lost income.”

Indeed, with Sheffield United’s players also looking at the possibility of suing West Ham, a can of worms has been opened. The east London club will also defend themselves to the hilt against these charges, although it does seem inevitable that their finances will be shaken by having to fork out £30 million to the Blades. Do Bolton also have a case or should this one be put to bed?
