Has this Liverpool STAR proved his doubters wrong or is he still not good enough?
by Mr Comfort on October 6th, 2008There is one player at Anfield who really does seem to split the fans down the middle in terms of his ability. This player has a great deal of determination, but leaves many believing he doesn’t really have the skill to warrant constantly appearing on the starting eleven team sheet. I think you know who I am talking about……

Dirk Kuyt once again proved yesterday his knack of scoring important goals. The Dutch international arrived as a striker with a proven goalscoring record (albeit in the Eredivisie which is essentially no better than the Championship) and, after a season up front, was converted into a wide man. Kind of like a Thierry Henry positional re-think in reverse.
There are some who believe that he doesn’t deserve to be a starter for a club of the magnitude of Liverpool, and that no amount of non-stop determined running for the cause can make up for some basic flaws in his footballing ability. However, as stated before, he has a knack of being the right place at the right time, scoring late crucial goals (albeit normally from three yards) that can prove invaluable to Rafa and he clearly knows this.
I am a fan of the former Feyenoord man, as I like a player who a) looks like he loves to play the game, loves the club and seems to realise just how lucky he is to be at such a great club and b) clearly gives his all for the entire 90 minutes (hence his ability to pop up at the crucial moment).
By playing him out wide, Rafa has pulled off a tactical masterstroke and this is even more apparent in a side that now has Robbie Keane to cater for. I think one negative you can lay at Kuyt’s feet is that sometimes it appears he is trying almost too hard. I know that sounds odd, but it’s almost as though when he gets the ball he is often trying to mentally repeat to himself to not make a mistake and in doing so, sometimes too often goes for the simple rather than deadly option. There is no doubt he can put in a quality ball, something he proved at the Euro’s for Holland, he just needs to do so more frequently and then he can truly become a Kop cult hero.
Fans on the whole will always appreciate a player of Dirk’s style, a player who gives 100% even though he will no doubt admit himself that he isn’t the best player on the park, but he doesn’t let that get in the way of his ceaseless attempts to take the club as far as they can go.

Well written piece and i think it pretty much sums up my feelings towards Kuyt, not much in the way of skill, but he does have ability a big heart and if he can come up with crucial goals and telling balls when necessary then he deserves his place in the team for sure

Mr Comfort i do believe you have written an actual article! (joke). Yes i think you make a good point, Dirk is a true professional and i think he has truly earned a place in the starting eleven.

Good to see a Pro-Kuyt article, what he lacks in talent he more than makes up with sheer willingness to win.

Sorry, but one goal in the league since last November isn’t enough for a right winger in a team that wants the league title. Kuyt will be useful in some games, no doubt. But week in week out you need more skill and ability to cut the lesser teams to pieces.
All Stoke, Hull, etc.. have to offer is hard work and sweat. That’s why the superior teams have to wipe them away with skill and ability. Kuyt doesn’t score against these lesser teams because they work as hard as he does and that’s all he offers. No skill, imagination or pace.
Kuyt is an honest lad and it’s hard to hate him. But we need a better right winger without doubt and then our team will be really lethal. But keep Kuyt in the squad for his heart and passion.

Kuyt can go to hamburg!

Kuyt is basically what I’d be like if I played for Liverpool. Not enough ability but would be proud to have achieved such an honour as playing for Liverpool.
I seriously believe if he had the pace/shooting as good as Torres and the tricks of Ronaldo he’d be the best player in world history.
Strange thing is why there aren’t so many great players with the heart of Kuyt.

i agree with xabi, kuyt is and always will be useles, forget champions league not important at the mo, would give that up for a prem victory but 1 goal is not enough to make up for the previous 20-odd matches without anything even pennant has a couple of goals and he’s hardly played, ok he’s got heart but unfortunately that nowadays isn’t enough maybe in the 80’s he would be a success but now you need a bit of quality, if you paid me 40,000 a wk i would run for ninety mins and play simple passes but thats all i’d be able to do and thats all he can do we need better use him as a sub only

Best article I have ever read on this website……..I like most of the Liverpool masses am split on Kuyt he is very industrious and gives his all for the club which is what every fan wants to see as we would all run ourselves into the ground for the club we love. However I do feel that a right winger needs to have more quality and personally think we could do a lot worse than throwing Ryan Babel out there as he has the ability to beat players and score goals.

Good article.
There definitely is a reason why Kuyt playes 90 minutes every game and Rafa hasn’t even considered selling him yet. Rafa ain’t stupid guys, especially when it comes to football. Dirk will be one of our key players when we finally win the premierleague (hopefully May 2009)

kuyt is ok, but whenever you watch him, you kind of shut your eyes and hope he doesn’t make a mistake or give the ball away.i think he isn’t a right winger though, when we played united, kuyt played striker and it was obvious that he had a boost of confidence and posed many problems for vidic and ferdinand, put him back as a squad striker, and get a better right winger

without kuyt, the opponent’s left wingers will maroon our right flank at will. he provides stability because he is willing to track back all the time - something some players refuse to do let alone all the time. it feels safe knowing that kuyt’s on the right though he can be quite frustrating at times. i’d rather not disrupt the stability for other unproven wingers.

jesus there’s some muppets on here. its a team game gents, youneed the right balance of hard working and flair players. believe in rafa he knows what hes doing. must be great for right fullback knowing hes going to get some help defending cant say that with a lot of right sided mid fielders. kuyt creates plenty of space for torres and alike to get their strikes on goal this often goes unnoticed. can you remember cisse(.its all about me) ever doing this just hope he cracks a few more in to keep quiet all the narrow minded fuckers

I would say Kuyt is one of the first name’s on Rafa’s sheet each week. He drives me mad most of the time, but he is so reliable. That’s easy to overlook. You know that he will give the oppostion’s left side a torrid time every match…plus he keeps going for 90 mins and his mentality is very important to Liverpool’s combacks. His record in CL is phenomenal!
I would hate to see him leave and I believe things would work a lot better with a top quality right back…imagine someone like Bosingwa on the right with Kuyt. Good balance, good in attack, good in defence.

I cannot believe that after scoring one, yes ones, goal in 11 months in the League people can say he’s proved himself. Yes he works really hard and gives it his all, but it still isn’t good enough. He’s taking Babel’s spot, a player who is in a totally different class to Kuyt, and it’s so frustrating.
I have commented a lot on his misgivings, and I watch him week in, week out to try and see what others see, but I cannot. He struggles to make simple passes, has no pace whatsoever, cannot beat a man on the outside and misses chance after chance after chance! He’s not good enough, we carry him every week. PLAY BABEL PLEASE!!!!!
