1. Ryan Giggs (He was spotted by a Man City scout and train with Man C for nearly a year when he is 13 years old. Sir Alex eventually went to his house personally to urge him to sign for Manu instead of Man C. He joined Manu on his 14th birthday.) It should be considered as a signing.
2. Eric Cantona
3. Roy Keane
4. Cristiano Ronaldo ( Yes he is great but he is still not on the legend mark like the top 3 i selected)
5. Edwin Van der sar ( His save won us the 2nd Champian League under Sir Alex)
OohAahCantona - October 7th, 2008 at 2:04 am
1. Eric Cantona - Without a doubt the catalyst for United’s success in the 1990s and the greatest artist to leave his mark on the Old Trafford canvas in recent years. He also left an indelible mark on the crop of youngters who were coming through at the time and his influence continued long after he left. A bargain at 1.2 million pounds. Fact that Cantona songs continue to do their rounds at Old Trafford more than a decade after his retirement says it all and who can forget his seagulls and trawlers and other quotable quotes?
2. Peter Schmeichel - Even though Cantona was the one who orchestrated the beautiful football, Schmeichel was the foundation rock upon which the success in the 1990s was built on, a colossus between the sticks, who gave the team the confidence and arrogance to exhibit their attacking flair to the fullest. Another bargain at 530,000 pounds.
3. Denis Irwin - Another absolute bargain at 625,000 pounds. A most reliable and consistent performer who in the days before overlapping South American or French fullbacks were in fashion, defended doggedly while showing considerable skill going forward, not to mention bending it like Beckham long before David made his bow. Consummate professional, never moans, 12 great years of service and most of the time playing as a righted footed left back.
4. Roy Keane - The real successor to Bryan Robson’s mantle as Captain Marvel for his all action no prisoners style. Although a record signing at 3.75 million pounds at the time, more than a decade of inspirational leadership at the heart of the United midfield means that every penny was well-spent.
5. Cristiano Ronaldo - 12.24 million pounds seemed like a lot of money to spend on an untried teenager at the time, but a mesmerizing debut against Bolton soon had the world notice that this was an immense talent in the making. The fact that Real Madrid seemed well-prepared to break the bank for his talents speaks volumes of what a bargain the 12.24 million pounds was. He may well become the best signing ever but his career is far from over yet and it remains to be seen if he would show the same loyalty and love as the 4 legends before him. He just about edges out Solsjkaer for fifth place only at the moment.
virgopq - October 7th, 2008 at 3:39 am
1. Giggsy - Ron Atkinson once said tt he was ‘God’s gift to football’.
Skillful & speedy wz good body movement.
2. Le King - Ooh Aah, Cantona!. Sublime ball skills. Intelligent football
sense.
3. Keano - Tenacity, Gritty, Fearless wz Leadership qualities.
4. Ole Gunnar - ‘Baby face Assasin’. Deadly finisher wz either leg & fantastic
header of the ball. Ultimate silent killer!.
5. Ronaldo - The best has yet to come. Believe it!.
dave - October 7th, 2008 at 5:09 am
hard to say. this thread seems to be divided into whether or not youth signings count as proper signings. giggs was a city player before he defected to OT. as was beckham a spurs player before he made the switch.
in terms of impact on the fortunes of the club during their time there, here are my top 5, assuming youth signings are excempt.
1. Schmeichel - Was the no.1 keeper in the world for the majority of his time at OT. an immovable rock and irreplaceable for years after his retirement. his name on the team sheet meant a torrid time for all opposition and his fellow defenders, though not for the same reasons. in terms of points value, impossible to gauge what his worth was to ferguson.
2. Keane - Was the foundation of Fergusons squad for his entire carrer at united. a blend of both players he had come to replace. posessed robson’s influence, drive and all round game, and also ince’s aggression strength. In common with both players he had the bravery required of a top class inforcing defensive midfielder.
3. Cantona - Yes, he did prove to be the catalyst, the final piece of the puzzle, the solution to winning the league. and when we won it, we didnt stop. but he didnt stay the course and wasnt, but shouldve been, at the nou camp in ‘99. yes he was charimatic, yes he had flair, yes hes been responsible for some of the most dramatic moments in the sport and some of the most “quotable quotes” in the history of the game. but when it came down to it, he didnt have the bottle to scrap it out. moments like the semis in ‘97 against dortmund, when kohler marked him out of the game(s) come to mind.
4-5. Id have to put irwin and bruce at a dead heat here. bruce scored an amazing amount of goals for a center half. wasnt the most technically gifted player. watching him try to keep the ball up wasnt pretty, and those goals came invariably by header from corner or penalty, but the stats dont lie. irwin was versatile, could play either full back role. was equally adept going forward or defending. struck a mean free kick and was mr. dependable to boot.
no, i havent put ronaldo anywhere in there, because united didnt just happen when the portuguese ladyboy came on the scene. yes he is a fantastic player, but he is far from being the complete striker the media laud him as being. after 27 step-overs he still wont beat a man, is a little too selfish to the detriment of the team, and could yet alienate his team-mates with his arrogance. when will it cease to be the ronaldo show, and start becoming the united show? it could take him moving on for us to find out.

Irish Scouser - October 7th, 2008 at 11:14 am
United fans, you should try to think of players that Ferguson didn’t break the British transfer record for! That would mean no Ferdinand, Keane or van Nistelrooy. And then you have Rooney and Berbatov costing just a couple of pounds short of the record. The whole essence of a top signing in good value - seriously, Wenger, Benitez and Harry Redknapp put Fergie to shame.
As for Ryan Giggs, it was Man CITY scouts that discovered him and Ferguson just stole in and flashed cash at the 14 year old. Though maybe you Mancs see that as admirable…
PS - you guys remember Veron?!

Ok.. For the Irish Scouser, who has yet to see Liverpool win the Permier League!!!
1. Cantona 1.2mil Approx!
2. Ryan Gigs for Next to Nothing as Youth! from Man City !
3 Ronaldo - 12 mil Aprox! (Liverpool couldnt aford him!! Cough Cough!)
4. Denis Irwin Aprox 650k
5. Schmeichel - 1.?
One other thing irish scouser! Do you know how many medals this lost has altogether! (Didnt think you could count that high!)
9torres - October 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
played against Irwin last year, he’s still got it! and also a scar on his toe from where i landed on him going for a header
Trevor Clatworthy - October 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
For 9torres
Only 2 from that 5 would get into the united team!
Torres and Gerrard!
But How many out of this would walk straight into the Liverpool team!
1 Ronaldo
2 Rooney
3 Ferdinand
4 Evra
5 Vidic
I would guess, ronaldo, rooney and ferdinand are certs!
You said “oh, is this not players he wished he had?? phsyc”
But if you take a look at our Trophy Cabinet you would really be saying “oh all the trophies i wish we had!”
hahahah… keep on dreaming! They might win the league in your lifetime!… If not you can always look at the old clips of the 70’s & 80’s!

keep on pointing!! While we keep on winning!

Nr. 1 has to be Ronaldo because he is the best in the world and the only one that Sir Alex has bought who is commonly referred as one. Didn’t even cost outrageous money
johnpanda - October 7th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Haha!
Sorry, I just read 9Torres post! Haven’t laughed as much in ages!
Carragher??!!
Hyypia??!!
Are you serious????!!!!
We’ve got a 20 year old from Rathcoole in Belfast who is already A LOT better than both of them, and I’m not even joking. Jonny Evans has pace, can pass long or short accurately, tackles like a beast, wins everything in the air and reads the game better than any 20 year old I’ve ever seen. Hyypia is slower than me(!) and Carragher is not exactly what you’d call a ‘ball player’. Too many Liverpool supporters think that running around screaming in a high-pitched voice makes someone a great player!
Granted, Torres is world class and would be a great addition to United’s (or anyone else’s) squad but none of the other 4 would improve us at all - and that includes the ridiculously over-rated Stevie G! He’s got a great shot from distance, but his general play is certainly no better than Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes or Anderson. He actually plays a lot like Fletcher but with more ego (and admittedly a great long-range shot). And who could forget how our 4th-choice central midfielder, Anderson, totally dominated him last season. It was embarrassing!
HeHe!
Thanks for that Torres9! You just made my day!
9torres - October 7th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
i think this post relates to best ever purchases? am i right? so the ten years of excellent service and the numerous premier league defender of the year awards (3 in a row at one point), won by sami hyypia means he was a bad buy at a cost of 2.5 million? Finnish footballer of the year 6 times. keep laughing johnpanda and hopefully someone will take you to the crazy house where you clearly belong…

Irish Scouser - October 8th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Some good posts out of you, 9torres. Ever notice how Liverpool fans seem to be so superior at grammer, spelling and FACTS than this shower of Mancs?
As for Trevor, you have listed 5 players that were relatively cheap for their time. I see you took my point into account and left out all those 20-30 pound players who really can’t be considered ‘good signings’. However, I really don’t think your 5 matches Liverpool’s best 5 over the last 25 years (or however long Fergie has been there).
As for medal count, you care to dip into history books with a Liverpool fan? Bad call, my Mancy friend…according to all you history counts for nothing! Care to compare Bob Paisley’s record with Fergie’s? Or even Rafa’s record with Fergie’s first 5 seasons in charge? I imagine you’ll be nice and embarrassed by then.
Irish Scouser - October 8th, 2008 at 12:25 am
Also, Trevor, you said:
“Ronaldo - 12 mil Aprox! (Liverpool couldnt aford him!! Cough Cough!)”.
Do you know how stupid it sounds to flaunt United’s superior transfer kitty? When Chelsea were winning the league it was because “they bought it” according to you lot of Mancs. We Liverpool fans are well used to United having more to spend but we can still attract Fernando Torres who took a wage cut and shunned United and the rest to play for the Kop. Meanwhile, you have Ronaldo, crying to leave for more money. I’m sure you’re all proud of him and the respect he’s shown. Sap.
Aston Villa for UEFA cup glory - October 8th, 2008 at 6:25 am
These definately the best
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (may be a whiny bitch but an awesome player on the pitch)
2. Eric Cantona (spearheaded the Man united treble era)
3. Wayne Rooney (worth every penny spent on him, scores more often then not)
4. Paul Scholes (been hitting them frmo long range ever since he hit Old Trafford, one agaisnt Barcelona last season in CL was a ripper)
5. Ryan Giggs (to have played 700000000000 games for united you would think he has been solid throughout his career)
9torres - October 8th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Indeed i have noticed this Irish Scouser. I have also noticed a lot of ‘Football Manager/FIFA/PES’ based “stats” and “facts”. A lot of bragging about things they don’t fully comprehend and also limited responses such as:
“Ronaldo - 12 mil Aprox! (Liverpool couldnt aford him!! Cough Cough!)”. Laughable, and also factually inaccurate, Houllier and the board decided they didnt want to risk 7.5 million on a 17 year old.
“We’ve got a 20 year old from Rathcoole in Belfast who is already A LOT better than both of them, and I’m not even joking. Jonny Evans…” To compare Jonny Evans, who may yet achieve a lot in his career (or may end up at Bury as a lot do), to players such as Carragher and Hyypia, who have achieved so much in their careers is ridiculous and also something only a united fan could try to do! Jonny Evans can only be compared to these two living legends once he is in his 30’s.
Basically a lot of shit being throw about, pretty much like the chimp enclosure at Chester Zoo. ’nuff said…
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
9torres!
I may not had all the exact facts! Although not thinking that Ronaldo was worth 7.5 mil is actually worse!
How much did you pay for pennent?
How much did you pay for Kewell?
How much did you pay for babel? ( although I think this kid will come good!!)
You also have said about the money Utd has thrown around, yes we have had a bit to go round. I attribute a lot of this to our success in the past 15 years! When Liverpool went on a fantastic run in the 70’s the money wasn’t as lucrative as being successful is today!
United have over the past years have continually been at least quarter final stage of the champs league, in the top four of the premiership. And also add to that have a stadium that holds a good 75 thousand! It’s not hard to see where that money has came from!
What I am pleased with is that we have kept and bought British players! Ferdinand - Rooney - Carrick - Hargreaves All of which I think we paid over the odds for. But that happens in England! English clubs don’t like selling to each other for some reason!
With regards to Carragher, I do like him! He is Liverpool’s version of United’s Gary Neville! Respect has to be given to both! Nev is Utd through and through! Carragher is Liverpool through and Through!
hypia on the other hand!, I have never rated that highly! .. Would be bottom of pack when compared with Ferdinand, Vidic, Stam,Carragher & Nev for that matter!
While liverpool are a good team! Man U is currently a Great team and current League and European Champions!
Lets see who finishes higher in the league! Lets see who gets further in Europe!!

You would need it, to watch your lot play every week!
9torres - October 8th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
And a Manc recycling old jokes… did you have to brush the dust off that one? Did you make it to Anfield by the way? Or did turn you’re nose up at the omittance of prawn sandwiches from the half time menu??
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I am an arm chair fan these days! Cant afford to go to many matches to be honest!!
It was about time you beat us anyhow! Its the law of averages, and it was some time since your last one! I dont think you lot were even impressive in that game, we had ourselves to blame!
Although not too much to brag about, you won 3 points from us and dropped 2 to stoke! What was that about?
Anyhow, these games dont really matter! Its about who is 1st at the end of the season. Although liverpool have never came first in the premier league have they?
9torres - October 8th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
“Anyhow, these games dont really matter! Its about who is 1st at the end of the season”
Does this rank as the most stupid thing posted on this forum???
How do you think you finish first in the league??
I think it’s by taking as many points from the available games as possible?
I spose the ref has gifted you a few points in the last two games so you might need to start winning off your own back soon… or not!
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
What i said is that it really doesnt matter if you beat us! It also doesnt matter if Chelsea & Arsenal beat us either! What matters is that we are 1st at the end of the season!
“i think it’s by taking as many points from the available games as possible?” Is what i was saying! 1 loss doesnt matter!!! Its who is 1st at the end of the season!
But as a liverpool fan you dont really know what it feels like to come 1st in the premier league!
Maybe one day!! … Keep on dreaming!
We need to start a thred all to our selves! and keep this banter going all season!
9torres - October 8th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
haha, yes but my point its that if arsenal, chelsea and Liverpool win all of their remaining games (which granted, won’t happen), then that result will matter. If you miss out on the league by one point then that will matter, same as our draw with stoke will matter
Irish Scouser - October 8th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Trevor, your points are so inconsistent - you seem to suck up to Liverpool at certain points, talking about your admiration for Carra straight after mocking him and saying that Babel is a rubbish buy, only then to say you think he’ll be great!
You also seem to know very little about United’s revenue sources…or history! You say they always get to CL quarter finals…did you miss the 2004, 05 and 06 seasons?! Recall United finishing BOTTOM of their group in 2006? Their main revenue comes from merchandise - and while this is important to all teams, United have truly sold out! Their success has not funded further success. Just look at Arsenal - very successful over the last decade and yet they’ll be a selling club until 2017.
Come on 9torres, I think Trevor is on his last legs now, there are plenty of other scumbag Mancs that need taking down a peg or two.
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
We are going round in circles here!!
If we do not win the league then it is not only the result against liverpool but the other points we droped throughout the year!!
So my comment still stands! The most important thing is who is 1st at the end of the season this is all that matters!
Who we got beat by during that year is Irrelevant.
9torres - October 8th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
exactly, so you dont want to win every game? the winners of the league this year won’t lose more than four games i don’t think. so that means losing another 3 and you could be out of the race…
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
I think it is going to be tight this year, you lot will be a little closer than last year! I think keane is going to come good, torres and gerrard will be as dependable as ever!
However i dont think you lot are good enough! Your still missing a couple of players!.. Depending on how well babel improves or how well reira settles that will make or break your league hopes! Liverpool just lack a bit of creativity.
ALthough the usual top 4 will be there, i can see alot of the lower teams taking points of the big 4! Look at what hull did to Arsenal! Expect more of the same throught the year!
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Will get in befor you get your oxford dictionary out!
throught was supposed to be through out!
Trevor - October 8th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Irish Scouser!!
i missed your message previously.
With regards to Babel and Carra i merly was honest!
My point with regards to babel was that Liverpool was not prepared to pay 7.5 mil for Ronaldo but have spent ?? on Babel!…. But admitted that in my opinion i think he will become good!
I do have admiration for Carra, as i said! Respect would be the true term! But i also feel he is not in the same league as Ferdinand, Vidic or Nev!
What i like about carra is that he is mr consistant! Very rarly has a bad game!
With regards to my comment, for a number of years UTD got into the champs league quater finals! Some years they didnt, but was making the point that they received good revenue for this! and this was added to our budget for players!
V Wilson - October 8th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
1. Ronaldo
2. Cantona
3. Keane
4. Schmeichel
5. Rooney
I am not including players who came up from the youth ranks and reserves. Great signings like Beckham, Scholes and Giggs were not as tough to acquire nor did they cost as much as the five above.

Since the decision about Ronaldo was made we have had a change of owners a change of manager, and football as whole has changed. Only a few clubs can afford to purchased the top players once they have come close to their peak, so there is more and more emphasis on buying young and getting the next big thing.
Oh, it’s m-e-r-e-l-y, merely.

You might think scholes is past it, and he is past his best! But to be honest he still pulls the strings in our midfield!
