Manchester City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips or Arsenal’s Theo Walcott – who would you choose for England?
by Thomas Rooney on October 9th, 2008With Premier League action taking a break this weekend, it’s back to the international fixtures and more specifically, England against Kazakhstan at Wembley. Fabio Capello’s side are looking to maintain the 100% record that they have achieved so far in their World Cup qualification process. On Saturday, they take on a side ranked 131st in the world and, let’s be honest, all football odds virtually guarantee England victory.
So, with the victory seemingly not in doubt, the bigger questions surround which team Capello will pick to face the footballing minnows of Kazakhstan. Now, after the fantastic team performance in Croatia, many people will suggest that the team remains the same. However, for one reason or another, this may not be the case.
First of all, there are the inevitable injuries. Of the team that started in Croatia, Joe Cole has already been ruled out, while John Terry and Emile Heskey are injury doubts. The latter should be fit though if reports are to be believed.
The second reason the team might change, in my opinion, is the excellent form of Shaun Wright-Phillips. Since moving back to Manchester City, Wright-Phillips has arguably been playing the best football of his career. The 27-year-old has caused no end of problems for the defenders he has come up against this year, and has already netted four times. Most significantly though, he appears to have a renewed hunger for the game – a new enthusiasm. This was something he lost slightly at Chelsea, but now he is back to his best, I am certain he will want to add to his 19 international caps.
Wright-Phillips, of course, has been operating on the right wing for Mark Hughes’ side and the man in possession of this position for England right now is Theo Walcott. Therefore, there must be a distinct possibility that Wright-Phillips is putting the youngster under pressure for his place. Don’t get me wrong, Walcott is the future of English football and was superb last time out for his country. However, since that fixture, I would say that Wright-Phillips has out-performed him for their respective clubs. Should this warrant a starting berth for the former Chelsea man?
I would be surprised is Walcott was left out, but it is certainly be something to think about. I just wanted to point out Wright-Phillips’ excellent form more than anything else. He really is a gem of a player and he hasn’t played nearly enough for his country. Hopefully this latest resurgence will be the start of a more productive international career for him.
Ironically, there is a very significant chance that both Walcott and Wright-Phillips will line up against Kazakhstan. Walcott’s performance in Croatia should be enough to see him retain his place and Wright-Phillips could replace the injured Joe Cole on the left-hand side of midfield. This certainly gives England a significant threat from both sides doesn’t it?
Then, with there being no particular need for a ‘holding midfielder’ against such opposition at home, Capello is set to replace Gareth Barry with the returning Steven Gerrard. Considering the ‘front six’ for England will then comprise of Walcott, Gerrard, Lampard, Wright-Phillips, Heskey and Wayne Rooney, I think I might place a football bet on England breaking the 5-0 barrier, hopefully with Wright-Phillips adding to his four international goals.

Being an Arsenal fan obviously I would choose Walcott because he’s younger and more agile, but no doubt SWP would be the majorities choice.

definately SWP for the time
he is dynamic and his skills can baffle the best of premier league defenders
walcott will get his chance later on trust me

the man of the moment of course THEO THE 14 WALCOTT

still unconvinced by walcott, never looks a very controlled footballer and his end product is often wild. sounds strange after scoring a hattrick in his last international, but if you look again at his goals he mis controlled 2 of them and only got away with it because of the time and space he had
but he has an age to gain experience and improve under arsene wenger and i’m sure in 2 years we will see a more refined player
swp used to suffer from the same problem, but since he has come back from chelsea he is a better player, combined now with his drive and enthusiasm he has got back at city. i think on form he should play swp.
shouldn’t really matter against these boys anyway, i’m sure even downing could look above average if he plays

Not that I am a Gunner, but Capello should not try to repair a vehicle which spoilt Nd should never nder rate the opponents of this game. Stick to the Zagreb line up and let the players learn a little more how to play together in an international situation.

SWP no doubt

It could also be argued that ashley young should be included.but back to the question,i would say that swp but not by much at all.and not just on club form but by the fact that the euphoria surrounding theo since has to be controlled for the sake of his career.but i would seriously say that ashley young should be given a chance.
dub b - October 9th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
come on why even ask? walcott MUST be given a chance after the last game.
Nick M - October 9th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
You can’t leave a player out if he scored a hat trick against better opposition last time out. For the guy who said Walcott doesn’t look in control, you must have been watching last seasons matches. This season his control, passing and sense of positioning are much improved, he has made some sensational runs and is usually keen to look for passes.
Ash - October 9th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
ashley young over both of them he shud be in squad
Jack Davies (mcfc) - October 9th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
i also think fabio cappello may be able to play both if he plays it right. If he managed to do that we could strike a brilliant right hand side midfield/attack which could give teams like holland and better a run for their money and if they could both gel even better,
Donj - October 9th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
I believe England will draw or maybe even lose. We won one game, big deal. Now comes the hype and hyperbole. If we start Gerrard and Lampard, I bet for a draw. England are sooooo bad at football.

c’mon man no brainer, theo walcott is england’s saviour, he scored a hattrick from midfield on his second start for his country out of position. theo should always start ahead of any1 in the 1st 11 for england. he is already a better player than wright phillips, clearly, theo’s skill is frightening. but i’d like to see no heskey or owen, and theo walcott join rooney up front, then you can have wright philips, beckham, pennant, or bentley in midfield.
i’m an arsenal fan and i think theo walcott is our player of the season so far. he works his guts out for arsenal and is reliable. at 19 years old he is potentially englands best player, you normally see this kinda talent play for france or holland.
Bobby - October 9th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
SWP is a better player at the moment, but by the time 2010 comes round Walcott will be far and away the better player. Given the importance of having a team that knows each other and the problems caused by swapping players around I’d start with Theo. It’s only Kazakstan anyway, hell they’d make Arron Lennon look good (maybe)
glenn helder - October 9th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
you would put a bet on england scoring 5 goals. are you mad? kazakhstan are rubbish, i agree, but they are probably technically better than us. all this expectation, all this pressure, haven’t people like you learnt anything? i’ll be happy with 3 points in the bag.
and i reckon swp and walcott are both crucial to our future. players who can take on defenders at pace are ashamedly rare. come on england!
GAGA - October 9th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Some1 said ashley young above both of them? i agree he should be there but not above these two, swp has to be the man for right wing he is quick like walcott but more skillful than walcott more experienced than him and basically better all round than him which is expected with him being a few years ahead of walcott, but does he drop walcott after a hat trick not a chance if he was to play swp he could cope on the left if he were to keep walcott on the right although swp has been impressive all the way along the top this year aswell also lets face it walcott is about pace and a good finish and thats it so why not try him up top as a striker he would rip alot of defenders apart, main thing for me is i think we should at least get a glimpse of walcott and swp on the same pitch together that could be deadly. As for a basic choice for this next match it has to be walcott he scored a hat trick in his last game. CTID

Give them both a good 45 minutes each. Who contribute to the team more take them on to the next match.
Rob - October 9th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Let them both have a half each
Both great players
Just proves Chelsea ruin good players:
SWP
Sheva
Crespo
Kezman
