Is Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher the most loyal Premier League player?
by Dexter on October 10th, 2008In times like these, most players would stab their club in the back for a payrise (Cashley Cole comes to mind), so this declaration from Jamie Carragher that he would take a pay cut if needs be, is testament to his loyalty…
Don’t forget to check out Online Football Manager!
The Liverpool defender (who is - confusingly - actually an Evertonian) is known for his loyalty to his club, even claiming that the pain of losing for England is nothing compared to losing in a Liverpool shirt. Carra claimed: “The idea of capping to make everything equal in football really excites me. It’d be like racing drivers changing cars to stop the same Ferrari driver always winning.
“A salary cap on equality would be the most fantastic thing and lead to great sporting competition.” (The S*n)
Carra’s declaration comes hot on the heels of Lord Triesman’s comment that salary caps may be something that clubs will have to take into consideration, a point made even more pertinent by the fact that West Ham’s Icelandic owners are currently staring into the Credit Crunch abyss…

You obviously missed the bit of his interview when he said the salary cap would be a good idea after he was retired.
He was joking.
Come on Dexter, do a bit of research first.

I wouldn’t say it made carra a loyal player, yes he has been loyal to liverpool, but its not like liverpool is a crap club. carra is not a technically gifted player and has been lucky that he has had managers that use him to good effect. he is at a massive club so why would he want to leave.
would carra be so loyal if liverpool were relegated?

He did say in his book that if Liverpool weren’t a top side and a better team came in for him he would leave. And don’t forget he was an Everton supporter until his early 20’s. I’d have to ask when has his loyalty been tested. I can’t remember any bids being made for him. That said, he has been a great servant and a terrific palyer. I wish more players had the dignity he has. When he gets hurt there are no hystrionics, he just gets up and gets on with it. Plays the game how it should be played. A legend.

I think Torres deserves a mention here - every club in Europe was interested in him - especially United and Chelsea and he took a pay cut to join Liverpool. That is rare. Compare to Ronaldo last summer - Ferguson having to explain to United fans that ‘all that money can be very tempting for a young lad’. Disgraceful.
Torres’ loyalty will be tested this January when Man City attempt to make him the best paid player in the world. He will do what is right.
