What does this striker have to do to get his name mentioned with the likes of Manchester United’s Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Messi?
by offsidetrap on October 10th, 2008Wayne Rooney has a problem on his hands. Whilst he is one of the best players in the Premier League, he happens to play on a club that is currently loaded with other talented that seem to hide his ability on a weekly basis. Rooney, who has been slung-about like a ragdoll moving from position to position on the pitch, made it clear yesterday that while he doesn’t have any issues with where he’s currently playing, he does want to one day be mentioned in the same breath with the likes of Messi and CRon.

England striker Wayne Rooney says one day he wants to reach the same level of play and recognition as Fifa World Footballer of the Year favourites Lionel Messi and Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo. (The Sun)
In all honesty, the only way Rooney might ever be able to obtain this dream would be to move to a club where he could be a full-time striker, or hope that Sir Alex gave him a more consistent role up front. But with Berbatov and Tevez in the way, that option doesn’t seem feasible.
What do United supporters think? Could Rooney ever reach this goal with his current squad?

He needs to learn how to score. They talk of ‘overall contribution’. That’s a fucking pathetic excuse. Look at Gerrard at Liverpool, plays in midfield, scores over 20 and assists 20 a season and tracks back + tackles well !
Messi, Ronaldo and Torres, maybe Casillas too will contest for the award this year. Rooney’s over-rated and no stats can prove otherwise. Go on you manc twats, say all you want but your 17 goal a season ’striker’ can’t match up to the very best in the world.
Just to set the record straight, I’m not a liverpool fan and respect ManU as a team. Not Wayne Rooney!

rooney had several lond term injuries after Euro 2004 and to be fair to him, this is an important factor why he hasn’t developed into the type of player CR is.
When Rooney has been injured, several occasions in the last few seasons, he’s out of the game for a lengthy period, then he’s gotta regain his fitness, then he’s gotta regain his touch. Then he’s gotta start playing consistently and only after that, he can start back from where he was before the injury to develop his game further. Let’s give this guy a break because his best is yet to come!
