‘We need to stop giving opponents head-starts’ admits Liverpool defender

The Reds have only failed to win two matches in the Premier League so far this season, both of which finished goalless (against Stoke and Aston Villa). In four of their other games, their opponents have taken the lead before Liverpool have fought back to land the three points, something which demonstrates character but is also a worrying sign that this team might fall short as far as a title bid is concerned.

Indeed, the official Liverpool website reports that Jamie Carragher has made both points, following on from his team’s 3-2 victory against Wigan. His central defensive partner had an uncharacteristic lapse to allow Amr Zaki open the scoring, while the Egyptian found the net again to put his team in front for a second time. Carra issues a warning that he and his team-mates can’t carry on this way if they’re to mount a realistic title challenge.

“It’s not something you want to be doing in every game of the season because eventually you’re going to come unstuck,” added Carragher.

“We were disappointed that we put ourselves in that position in the first place, but you’ve got to look at the positives and the strength of character we showed to come back and win the game.

“You’re going to need a lot of character to challenge for the league title over the next few months.”

Many Liverpool fans are concerned that the team’s performances are not that great at the moment, although Torres being injured twice hasn’t helped matters. Do the supporters need to see the Reds give one or two teams a comprehensive tonking before they can really start to believe that the Merseyside club can pip Manchester United and Chelsea to the title this season?
