Liverpool and Manchester United supporters understand the importance of a star player. Before Torres came along, the club relied heavily (they still do) on talismanic captain Steven Gerrard for goals, leadership and guidance. The same could be said for Manchester United, who put their reliance squarely on the shoulders of Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane when the going got tough. But times have changed.
Whilst Gerrard is still Captain Fantastic at Liverpool, the club’s reliance on his play has greatly decreased with the emergence of Fernando Torres at Anfield. It’s the same way for Manchester United, who watched as Keane and Giggs disappeared from the spotlight and get replaced with C-Ron’s flashy style.
Both Torres and Ronaldo are what we like to call match-changers. With the match on the line, both know how to pull a rabbit out of a hat and get their team a positive result. Their importance could surely be seen during their absence due to injuries. United looked anemic without Ronaldo early in the year; Liverpool look lost without Torres.
