This latest selection of comments from a player long known to be admired by Arsene will have many believing his potential move to the Emirates just got more likely.
Arsenal target Ibrahim Afellay has refused to shut the door on a move away from PSV in the January transfer window.
Afellay is exactly the type of player that Arsene Wenger regularly adds to his Arsenal squad – a true ball player who puts finesse over brawn.
The 22-year-old has been linked with a switch to Emirates Stadium, with Emmanuel Eboue said to be on the hitlist of Juventus.
Afellay currently has a contract until 2011 – but only after a stalled period of contract negotiations, and he admits the possibility of a transfer is not out of the question if the right club comes knocking.
“I told them then from day one that I would like to stay with PSV. But it took them a long time to decide,” he told NRC Handelsblad.
“More than once I thought ‘come on guys, what are we talking about?’ I have spent my entire career at PSV. Then you expect that things go more smoothly.
“I can’t say that I will finish the season at PSV no matter what. You can’t plan anything in football. It can change from day to day. At the moment I feel fine at PSV. We will see what happens.” (Setanta Sports)
Now if those comments don’t reek of a player looking to make a sharp exit from a club, then I don’t know what do! Afellay is a very talented youngster, and one who could fit right in with the current crop that Arsene has at his disposal. The £9m-rated Dutch international is the archetypal Wenger signing, and one that could well materialise sooner rather than later. Do Gunners fans think that Ibrahim would be a good addition to the club, or is he not good enough to break into the starting eleven?
