While it wasn’t exactly the Chelsea ‘B’ team that took to the field at the Riverside last Saturday, there were a number of key players missing in action. Some thought that Middlesbrough stood half a chance of getting something out of the game. 120 minutes later, the home team had been utterly humiliated by a 5-0 scoreline, and it was clear that Phil Scolari’s squad has strength in depth.
Therefore, it’s little wonder that The Press Association are reporting that Peter Kenyon doesn’t expect to make any signings in January (not least because Manchester City might be chasing anyone and everyone). The Chelsea chief exec reckons that the club are well-equipped in all departments, and has unerring faith in the manager to deliver success to Stamford Bridge this season.
Kenyon explained: “It’s our intention to put our squad together at the start of the season. I don’t see us being active in the January window. I don’t think there is a need, unless that changes through events like injuries.”
Kenyon added: “We see ourselves as being very focused on getting the title back.
“We have a squad that is good enough, arguably the best squad in depth and Luiz has the ability to get the best out of that.
“From where I am sitting the Premier League is more competitive than last year. I know it sometimes looks predictable but I can promise you it is not.
“Luiz Felipe Scolari has had a fantastic start and had a big impact – top of the league and top of our group in Europe.”
Do Chelsea have any weakness or are they well covered in all departments? It’s hard to argue with the start they have made, despite missing out on Robinho during the August transfer window. Would you bet against them winning the Premier League and Champions League this season?
