‘I deserve both player of the year awards’ boasts Manchester United forward: Can anyone beg to differ?
by stresster on October 24th, 2008If there was an award for the most modest footballer of the year, you suspect that this player might just miss out on making the shortlist. He kept Manchester United fans hanging on throughout the summer, refusing to commit to the Red Devils until Fergie had a quiet word in his ear. Now it appears that he’s to be recognised as the best footballer on the planet.
Love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo is a special talent, somebody who could go on to become one of the game’s true greats. Sky Sports reports that the United number seven fully expects to win the Ballon D’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year, and it’s hard to argue against him. After all, this is a guy who scored 42 goals in all competitions for the champions of England and Europe last term.
He told Gazzetta dello Sport: “Sincerely, yes, I’m confident.
“If you assess what I did over the course of the season, I think I did more than everyone. What else should I have done to win the Ballon d’Or and the Fifa award.”
Does everyone agree that the Manchester United star is better than anyone else in the world at the moment? Or could he face competition from his own team-mate Wayne Rooney, who is currently playing some red-hot football and in on a fantastic scoring streak? There’s also players like Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi to consider, although there seems little doubt as to who will scoop the awards.

Considering what he did, the SPECTACULAR season he had, and what he helped his team to achieve, yes, he deserves the Ballon d’Or. Plus the definition of modesty is knowing and accepting what one’s great at and what not, so there’s no trace of anything that honesty in those comments. And no, I don’t love him, I’m just being objective.

Maik, the award is from performances over the last year, from Novermber to November - he had an awful summer on the world stage with Portugal and has yet to do anything this season. Let’s not forget his utterly disgraceful behaviour over the summer, trying to break his contract, not to mention all that diving, arrogance and cheating he does.

Although I don’t think it was right, if you listen to what he said afterwards it was all pretty logical (most people don’t believe him, I personally don’t care if he was lying), plus the only thing he did is do nothing about what was being said about him, from what I’ve read and heard. Plus, while he didn’t do much for the last couple of games let’s remember he spent 2 months out with an injure, and during the first half, which was quite longer than the period you talk about, he was spectacular. While I like Messi as a player (the only real contender) he hasn’t shined as much during the first half, plus with Argentina he was just awful (I’m from Argentina, watched every game, and yes, including the olympics hah) to the point that, IMO, he should be left in the bench for a while so that he can see that playing for your country isn’t something that happens every day/

Great player, he may be right, but fuck him with a boat anchor anyway!
