Cristiano Ronaldo may have dominated the back page headlines over the summer, although it appears that while Real Madrid were in the hunt for the Portuguese forward, there were also a string of clubs interested in landing the signature of another Manchester United squad member. Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he was massively relieved when this player signed a new contract, especially as he rates him so highly.
Setanta reports that the player in question is none other than Darren Fletcher, one of the unsung stars of the team at the moment. The Scot has scored three goals for United this season, delivering consistent performances in the process, although it’s the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney and Berbatov who have been getting all the attention. Fergie is chuffed to have him on board.
“The relief of the season was to get Darren a new contract because there were a lot of clubs trying to buy him,” said Ferguson.
“He had one year left but he wanted more football. Leaving could easily have been a consideration simply because with Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes and Anderson there is so much competition.
“I told him he had been brought up at this club and after January, he had been playing in all the big games until he got an injury and not to forget he came back and played some more.
“It convinced him to stay, which was what we wanted because now he is such an important player for us.
“He has developed his game and taken it to a new level.”
Do Manchester United fans rate the midfielder as highly as the manager? Would he get into your best Red Devils XI at the moment, ahead of the likes of Scholes, Anderson and Carrick?
