Manchester United announce a new sponsorship deal: Should suit the manager very well!

Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser. That’s the expression that some people use when they react badly to defeat, and it’s almost certainly a mantra of Sir Alex Ferguson, who takes a loss about as graciously as you would if I fetched you one across the chops for no particular reason. On the occasions that Manchester United have been trailing over the past few seasons, the Scot has often been keen to ensure that the referee gives them as much time as possible to get back into the game, which is where the club’s latest sponsor comes in.

The BBC reports that yet more cash is piling into the coffers at the Premier League champions, with Hublot the latest company to get their brand out there on a global basis.

After signing the Hublot deal, Man Utd chief executive David Gill said: “We are delighted to welcome such a prestigious partner as Hublot to the Manchester United family.”

Jean-Claude Biver, chief executive of Hublot, said it was “an extraordinary partnership for Hublot”.

Hublot was founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco. As part of the sponsorship deal, the luxury watchmaker is to produce a Red Devil watch, with a 45-minute counter – the time of a half of play in football.

Now that a watch manufacturer has joined the corporate love-in at Old Trafford, Fergie can ensure that no referee takes any liberties when it comes to blowing up if his team happen to be trailing as the match goes into injury-time. Expect the Manchester United manager to be pointing at his Hublot at a football ground near you, depending on whether he wants an arbiter to blow up or play some more added time!
