Tottenham manager backs error-prone goalkeeper ahead of Liverpool match

It’s likely that Harry Redknapp will make one or two signings in January. While the Tottenham manager has accepted that he’s inherited a squad full of top-class talent, there are clearly one or two areas which he feels could do with strengthening.

However, the goalkeeping position might not be one of them, despite the comedic performance of Heurelho Gomes on Wednesday night. Once again, the Brazilian came out waving to his mum on a number of occasions, failing to collect crosses and certainly being culpable for Arsenal’s equaliser just before half-time. Nevetheless, the Daily Telegraph reports that Redknapp is backing his number one to kick on and become a star at White Hart Lane.

Brazilian Gomes, with his rash interceptions and clumsy errors, has appeared the weak link in Tottenham’s team recently but Redknapp said: “He has a reputation as world-class and he’s brave, he makes decisions and goes for the ball. [Goalkeeping coach] Pat Jennings feels he can be a big goalkeeper in this league.”

He certainly has been making decisions, although they haven’t always been the right ones! Many have suggested that the Tottenham manager will be looking to poach someone like David James from Portsmouth at the earliest opportunity, although others might argue that the goalkeeping position is the one most under the microscope and that it’s been a baptism of fire for Gomes up to now, with the team playing so badly. Do supporters think he can cut it at White Hart Lane?
