Liverpool and Arsenal are monitoring Xavi Hernandez’s situation at Barcelona after he refused to sign an extension to his contract.
The Daily Mail reported that he is unhappy with the lack of progress with his contract at the club.
Xavi is currently earning less than Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and Carles Puyol. His current contract ends in 2010.
A source close to Xavi said: “Barcelona seem to think that because he is Catalan he would never leave the club.
“This is a dangerous and arrogant attitude. He is one of the best midfielders in the world but Barcelona do not seem to realise his value.” (Kop-tv.com)

The rumour mill has been flooded with news of interest in Xavi from clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus in recent times, and this appears to have inspired Barca to wrap up the imminent contract negotiations.

One of the first questions Pep Guardiola was asked at the press conference following Xavi’s brace in the 4-1 win at Malaga regarded the midfielder’s future, and the manager’s response was firm and direct.

“Xavi’s future is non-negotiable, and he will remain here while I am the coach”, said the man who told a young Xavi that he would one day replace him in the Barca midfield. (goal.com)

There can be few more accomplished players in the game than the 28-year-old Barcelona man. The Spanish international has been a cult figure at the Camp Nou for more than a decade now, and has amassed an incredible 400+ appearances for the Catalan giants. He has helped them to an array of silverware and, depending on who you believe, it could be that the central midfielder could be set to leave the club he has represented since he was 11. Some say his contract woes are shortly to be resolved, and others believe he is looking for a new challenge. Either way, if Benitez managed to secure the Champions League winner, it would be one hell of a coup. Do Liverpool fans think that the club could perhaps persuade the impish talent to the club?
