Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has revealed his relief at being given a run in the Reds team due to the injury to Martin Skrtel, with the Danish International, who is reportedly a target for La Liga Champions Real Madrid, accepting that a starting place is not guaranteed for anyone at Anfield.
Reports earlier in the season had claimed that Agger was keen on a move away from the Premier League, after having limited first-team opportunities, with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez preferring to partner Skrtel with former England International Jamie Carragher at the heart of the Reds defence.
However, due to the knee injury that Skrtel suffered against Manchester City on October 8th, which will keep the Slovakian International out until Christmas, Agger has been given a run in the Liverpool side and is glad to be back.
“It’s never easy to get into the team when you have a squad like we have at Liverpool,” said Agger.
“Although I want to impress everyone again, I know I have to just play my own game. If the way you play is good enough then you will be in the team and hopefully I can get a good run now.
“It feels good to be back.” (Premiershiplatest.com)
It’s good to see Daniel back in the side, even if it is only because Martin Skrtel is injured. Nice also to hear quotes from the Dane that he is happy to be at the club and willing to fight for a first team run, although it’s no surprise that Real Madrid are sniffing around the centre back, given that the La Liga giants have managed to keep just two clean sheets in 15 matches this season. Rafa is wise enough to know how to chop and change his back line to keep everyone happy, and I am fairly confident that even if Bernd Schuster did come in with a bid for the former Brondby man, then the 23-year-old wouldn’t be interested. Who do Liverpool fans think is the best centre-back pairing at the club?

Personally, though i think Carra is a Liverpool legend, he has been a little inconsistent - having a fantastic game against Chelsea and then misjudging the header against Ath Madrid and the own goal against Spurs. When Skrtel is back, i think Rafa should leave Carra and Agger in the team, but if one starts to lose form, Skrtel should be back in.
There’s also the option to play Carra at right back and Arbeloa at left back, with Skrtel and Agger centre, but that may be one for next season.
At the end of the day, we can’t change a defence which is doing well. Once one player loses form, that’s when a change is to be made. Defence is all about consistency.

For me, it is simple.
Carra is getting older and not as fast as he used to be.
Skrtel and Agger should be given the chance to develop under the influences of Carra and Hyppia.
Carra’s errors are proving costly at the most crucial times and I believe that he should be rested.

I would like to see Rafa trying to start implementing at the moment
Reina
Arbeloa Skrtel Agger Carragher
as a backline, to use Carragher to help them two settle into a partnership, then buy Bale in the summer and just rotate Carra in at Full backs and centre backs if needed. We should also probably send Hyypia out on loan because he’s not really going to get any football.
