Liverpool pair Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger are set for new Liverpool deals…
Dirk Kuyt has been in dazzling form over the last few months. So often the fringe player both for the Reds and with the Dutch national side, he’s enjoyed a good Euro 2008, a strong pre-season and has started the new season well with Liverpool.

Danish defender Daniel Agger, meanwhile, is trying to regain the sharpness needed to replicate the form that made him a key player at Anfield during the 2006/07 season. He missed the bulk of last season due to a metatarsal injury which initially healed, only to recur in January.

The Liverpool Daily Post quotes Benitez as saying an agreement with Agger’s agent is “very close”.

The gaffer continued, “There is no news yet with Kuyt, but he is another player that I would like to get done as soon as possible. Before the New Year.

“In each team you need people with quality, who work hard and have a good character…Kuyt has everything. He might not have a fine touch, but he scores goals, he’s not bad in the air and his work-rate is amazing,

“It’s better for them and better for us to get it sorted.” (goal.com)

For differing reasons, these two deserve extended deals. Kuyt is a very much maligned figure outside of Merseyside, but he has proven with his knack of scoring crucial goals and his never-say-die attitude that he is every bit a top quality Premier League performer. Daniel should be given a new deal because of his determination to fight for a first team place, something he has secured in recent weeks due to Martin Skrtel’s recent injury.

The Dane is still young and a quality centre back who Benitez is keen to keep sweet, so a new deal will confirm to the former Brondby man that he is very much part of the boss’ plans. Do Liverpool fans believe both of these players are key to a long hard season, which could well end with a long-awaited league title?
