“We have England’s number one” claims Manchester United manager: Number one diver?

While Cristiano Ronaldo might be set to scoop an armful of awards for being such an amazing player, he’s not the only member of the Manchester United squad being bigged up at the moment. Sir Alex Ferguson has high praise for this player, despite the fact that he played just one match for the Red Devils last season.

Setanta reports that the Scot has only just stopped short of chanting ‘England’s, England’s number one’ at Ben Foster when he meets him on the training ground, with Fergie claiming that the 25-year-old is England’s best player between the sticks.

“I can only go on what I see of that lad and in terms of first-team football that means the Derby game last season,” said Ferguson. “But that was absolutely outstanding. Considering it was his first game for a year, it was a magnificent performance.

“From that, what we see of him in training and what we saw of him at Watford, yes, I would say he is England’s number one.”

One swallow does not a summer maketh and similarly, one performance against a team doomed for relegation matters little when it comes to assessing pure form. Nevertheless, the Manchester United shot-stopper will get a chance to prove that he’s a quality keeper against Celtic on Wednesday evening, will he grab it with both gloved hands?
