Liverpool manager ignoring the growing points gap between them and Manchester United: The fans won’t be!

Most Anfield regulars will have been pleased to see Arsenal beat Manchester United on Saturday. Whilst the Gunners are one of the best teams in the division, the Red Devils will surely pose a more serious threat to Liverpool’s title chances this season, and the result at the Emirates means that the Merseyside club are now eight points clear of the champions.

Not that Rafael Benitez is paying much attention to the growing chasm, although the Spaniard has admitted that he’ll start to relax if his team go twenty points clear of the Red Devils! The Daily Post reports that the Liverpool manager is focusing on the job in hand, rather than worry about the mathematics of the league table, although he must be secretly delighted that such a gap has already emerged.

“If you spend the whole time with a calculator considering what others are doing, it will drive you crazy,” said the Anfield manager. “You must concentrate on what you are doing. United may be trailing us, but we are not looking at what they are doing, only ourselves.

“Manchester United still have a game in hand and the ability to make up points in just two other games is not that difficult for them.

“When the gap is 20 points, then I will relax. But with just this small difference all I can say is we must keep going all the time and not think about what other teams are doing.”

Liverpool supporters, are you genuinely starting to believe that the team is equipped to win the Premier League this season, or do you just think that running the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United close will be an improvement on previous seasons? While Benitez might be keeping a calm head, the Reds have already beaten their two main rivals, a psychological boost that they haven’t experienced for several seasons.
