This source suggests that the Emirates outfit will try again to nab this talented midfielder.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to make a new bid for Liverpool’s Spanish midfield supremo Xabi Alonso – and bring his strength and experience into his side.
Wenger sent top and trusted spy Steve Rowley to watch the Kop ace in scoring action against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend ahead of a £12 million move.
Now Wenger – alarmed by the occasional immaturity of his team – is back on the case and with the cash backing to make one hugely significant signing if Liverpool will play ball.
The only snag is that Alonso cannot play in the Champions League, but Wenger’s main worry is making the elite competition next season by finishing in the top four and a hefty fee is worth investing in that equation. (Daily Mirror)
Arsene Wenger was reportedly very keen on signing Xabi in the summer when it appeared that Rafa wanted to cash in on the Spanish international to raise funds for a move for Gareth Barry, which of course was unsuccessful. However Alonso has been in good form this term and Benitez will surely not be keen on selling the European Championship winner now so I am sure that the Gunners will be told to look elsewhere. You can see why Arsenal would want the midfielder as they are a little short on experience, especially across the middle of the park after the departures of Flamini, Gilberto and Hleb in the summer, players who have still to be effectively replaced. Denilson started the season well and helped ease the problems in this regard but the Brazilian’s inexperience of late has been apparent. Do Liverpool fans think that their boss would consider selling their half way line shooting expert?
